Sherdog.com: UFC, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) News, Results, Fighting
By: Sherdog.com Staff It has been a year of volatility at the championship level in mixed martial arts. The topsy-turvy nature of 2016 has seen seven new UFC champions minted in just seven months of action, which is exactly the sort of chaos powerful enough to reshape the Sherdog.com pound-for-pound rankings.

Tyron Woodley: Georges St-Pierre wants to fight me for the welterweight title
“I’ve already spoken to the lineal champion, the No. 1 welterweight, the pound-for-pound one of the greatest in the sport. His interest is fighting me,” Woodley said. “Georges St-Pierre wants to fight me. And guess what? I want to fight him. There’s honor in it. If I’m going to put it on the line, risk it, I want to know that I at least had the opportunity to prove to myself that I am the best welterweight to ever grace the damn Octagon, and if he’s going to give me that chance, I can give a hell less.”

The Bottom Line: Right Time for a UFC Grand Prix

Since Tyron
Woodley knocked out Robbie
Lawler at UFC
201 on Saturday in Atlanta, conversation in the MMA world has
centered on the preponderance of title changes and upsets in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship over the past year. In division
after division, promising champions have fallen. Chaos has been the
order of the day, and many have lamented the trend because it’s
hard for star attractions to rise up in a sport increasingly
defined by parity.
It’s true that superstars are the lifeblood of an individual sport
like MMA and that it’s hard for any fighter to stand out to the
general public when championships flip back and forth so quickly.
However, there are pros and cons to any trend, and a smart promoter
recognizes how best to capitalize on a changing landscape. The
current trend of frequent title changes and deep divisions of
evenly matched contenders lends itself to an exciting concept the
UFC has not yet attempted: the first ever UFC grand prix
tournament.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Minnesota: Sean Sherk
Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe,
bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of
their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or
state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States
are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly
is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series,
the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of
all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily
need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need
to be associated with it.
***
When Sean
Sherk was at his best, few could match him. The stocky wrestler
from St. Francis, Minnesota, used his combination of pure physical
strength, stellar conditioning and time-tested technique to remain
unbeaten (19-0-1) through his first 20 pro bouts before challenging
Matt
Hughes for the
Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title in 2003.
Sherk came up short against Hughes at UFC 42, but “The Muscle
Shark” was well on his way to a terrific career in mixed martial
arts.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Another UFC Event, Another New No. 1
It used to be a big deal when these rankings were updated to reveal
a new fighter sitting atop his or her division. With all due
respect to Tyron
Woodley and his conquering the welterweight throne, his
destruction of Robbie
Lawler at UFC
201 in Atlanta was just another episode in the Ultimate
Fighting Championship’s tumultuous 2016.
First it was Dominick
Cruz and then Miesha Tate .
Next came Stipe
Miocic , and then Michael
Bisping shocked the world. Eddie
Alvarez followed, but the MMA world could hardly even celebrate
his 155-pound title win, as Amanda
Nunes took Tate’s 135-pound women’s championship just two days
later at UFC 200. Now, Woodley is the boss at 170 pounds.
To recap, that is seven new UFC champions and seven new divisional
leaders in just seven months. If Jon Jones has
his United States Anti-Doping Agency suspension upheld later this
year, he will be removed from this list, as well, giving us an
eighth new No. 1 in 2016. It has been a year of heavy flux, to say
the very least. Speaking of USADA, a two-year suspension for
formerly fifth-ranked featherweight Chad Mendes
sees his removal from the Sherdog.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Demetrious Johnson Turns 30
The benchmark by which all 125-pound fighters past and present are
judged,
Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight titleholder Demetrious
Johnson has turned away one would-be successor after another
since he rose to the top four years ago. Johnson will celebrate his
30th birthday on Aug. 13.
“Mighty Mouse” captured the inaugural flyweight crown at UFC 152 on
Sept. 12, 2012 with a split decision over Joseph
Benavidez and has looked nothing short of unstoppable as
champion. On a 10-fight winning streak, Johnson last competed at
UFC 197 in April, when he cut down 2008 Olympic gold medalist
Henry
Cejudo with first-round knees at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in
Las Vegas. Others who have been victimized by the
AMC Pankration rep during his historic reign: John Dodson
(twice), John Moraga ,
Kyoji
Horiguchi , Chris
Cariaso and Ali
Bagautinov .
Johnson -- who withdrew from a schedule battle with Wilson Reis
at UFC 201 due to injury -- will next defend his flyweight title
against the winner of “The Ultimate Fighter 24” in December.

Yair Rodriguez, Dennis Bermudez, Thales Leites Among Favorites at UFC Fight Night 92
Yair
Rodriguez has inspired belief among the oddsmakers.
Rodriguez according to BetDSI.com has been installed as a healthy
-300 favorite ahead of his clash with Alex
Caceres (+250) in the
UFC Fight Night 92 main event on Saturday at the Vivint Smart
Home Arena in Salt Lake City. Dennis
Bermudez (-210) will face Rony
Mariano Bezerra (+180) in the featherweight co-headliner.
A Chicago-based taekwondo black belt who has spent time training at
the powerhouse
Jackson-Wink MMA camp in New Mexico, Rodriguez will enter the
cage on the strength of a six-fight winning streak. The 23-year-old
burst on the scene in 2014, winning “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin
America.” Rodriguez last fought at UFC 197 on April 23, when he
knocked out Andre Fili
with a second-round head kick at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las
Vegas.
Spawned by Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series,
Caceres now operates out of the
MMA Lab in Glendale, Arizona, where he trains under John
Crouch. The 28-year-old has followed a three-fight losing streak
with back-to-back wins over Masio
Fullen and Cole Miller .

* * *
Perhaps the most unanimously beloved championship domino fell when
Robbie
Lawler was knocked out at UFC
201 on Saturday in Atlanta. Prior to that, it seemed like no
division was safe.
Starting with Holly Holm ’s
win over Ronda
Rousey at UFC 193, every division except light heavyweight,
flyweight and women’s strawweight has seen varying degrees of
championship reshuffling. Conor
McGregor dethroned longtime featherweight king Jose Aldo ;
Dominick
Cruz reclaimed his bantamweight title from reigning champ
T.J.
Dillashaw ; Stipe
Miocic shocked undisputed heavyweight champion Fabricio
Werdum in Brazil; Michael
Bisping upset Luke
Rockhold in spectacular fashion; and Eddie
Alvarez put a beatdown on Rafael dos
Anjos . Now, Tyron
Woodley can add his name to that list. The only three divisions
not affected by this have basically been held steady by all-time
talents -- Joanna
Jedrzejczyk , Demetrious
Johnson and, with all due respect to Daniel
Cormier , Jon Jones .

Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson slams Tyron Woodley for avoiding the real No. 1 contender
"It's starting to get that way, it's starting to get that feeling," Thompson said when asked if Woodley was running from him. "At first, I didn't think so, I thought he just wanted the big payday, the big money, but when I go back and look at the facts -- the fact is I'm on a seven-fight winning streak. He was ranked No. 4 and they gave him the title shot. I've cleaned out the division for him. It just doesn't make sense why he wouldn't face me, at least one time against the No. 1 contender without having to go out and pick these guys who haven't fought.

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member
of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com
blog. This week, Breen is joined by BloodyElbow.com's John Nash .
Ahead of Nash's forthcoming series of articles for BloodyElbow
analyzing recently disclosed purses in both MMA and boxing, he and
Breen discuss his findings after comparing reported paydays in
California, Florida and Nevada last year, the impact Floyd
Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have on the average boxing purse,
the curious way in which the UFC inflates mid-tier fighter salaries
against market value and what impact the Muhammad Ali Act would
have on the politics of fighter pay if adopted for MMA.
Breen and Nash also talk about the concept of competition between
promoters in both MMA and boxing, the surprising fact that the
UFC's ostensible competition aren't actually competing against the
industry leader the way that people think and how boxing's plethora
of sanctioning bodies and proliferation of “world titles” actually
helps boxers make big bank.

Tyron
Woodley ’s first-round knockout of Robbie
Lawler at UFC
201 made him the seventh new
Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder in less than a year.
As someone who was considered undeserving of a title shot, Woodley
adds his name to a growing list of underdogs who have emphatically
proved the naysayers wrong.
Does this recent string of title changes and unpredictability bode
well for the UFC in the long run? Sure, it’s fun to see that
anybody can beat a world champion on any given night; and that
hasn’t been clearer than in the past year, as world champions have
fallen at a frightening rate against opponents that few thought
could usurp them. However, is there any such thing as an “upset”
anymore considering how frequently titles have been changing hands?
Do the titles mean much of anything anymore considering that nobody
can hang on to them long enough to establish themselves as true
champions? What we love about mixed martial arts can also be its
biggest detriment: unpredictability.

Tuesday's session at the Association of Boxing Commissions’ annual
convention was surreal at best and chaotic at worst. A committee of
regulators, fighters and referees put in hours and hours of work to
come up with a list of modifications to the Unified Rules of MMA
and those proposals were whittled down to a smaller set of changes
by the medical advisory committee, comprised of some of the top
ringside physicians in the country. These changes were set to be
voted on Tuesday in Las Vegas.
It seemed like a simple task but if I’ve learned anything over the
last seven years I’ve been attending the ABC's annual conference,
it's that whenever you get a bunch of regulators in one room, be
prepared for the unexpected.
When the voting members were asked if they were ready to call for a
motion, California's Executive Officer Andy Foster
asked for a 10-minute recess.

The Walkmen: UFC 201 ‘Lawler vs. Woodley’
To say Tyron
Woodley ’s knockout of Robbie
Lawler was impressive would be a gross understatement.
Woodley showed no fear of Lawler’s vaunted power and instead
matched him with some of his own, icing the “Ruthless” one in the
first round to capture the
Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight crown in the
UFC
201 main event on Saturday at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The
music to which “The Chosen One” walked to the Octagon could not
have been more fitting.
A two-time NCAA All-American wrestler at the University of
Missouri, Woodley strolled out to Thi’sl’s “King Without a
Crown” ahead of the most important fight of his career. Lawler,
meanwhile, opted to go with customary Sam and Dave classic “Hold on (I’m
Coming)” in his ill-fated title defense.
A few metal tracks stood out during the event, along with some
hip-hop classics.
American Top Team ’s Michael
Graves chose White Zombie’s underrated “Ratfinks, Suicide
Tanks, Cannibal Girls” while Damian
Grabowski turned to Sabaton’s “40:1” to find
inspiration; and the Notorious B.
