UFC 227 Bonuses: Cejudo, Johnson Snag ‘Fight of the Night’ Honors for Tense Title Bout

It’s not every night that a record title reign comes to an end. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Henry Cejudo and Demetrious Johnson received “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their five-round nail-biter in the UFC 227 co-headliner at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday. Ultimately, Cejudo made the necessary adjustments from his first-round TKO defeat to “Mighty Mouse” in April 2016 to capture a hard-fought split decision verdict and end Johnson’s stranglehold on the division. Meanwhile, T.J. Dillashaw had a pretty good night at the office as well, getting a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for his first-round knockout of rival Cody Garbrandt in the evening’s main event. As the action got more and more frenzied, it was Dillashaw who found a home for the devastating counter that put “No Love” on his heels. That set the stage for the reigning bantamweight champion to swarm, and he put Garbrandt away with a barrage of offense against the fence at the 4:10 mark of round one. Finally, Renato Carneiro was equally impressive in earning the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award.

Matches to Make After UFC 227

T.J. Dillashaw left no doubt about his being the better man. Dillashaw retained the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight title and improved to 2-0 against his archrival, as he put away former Team Alpha Male stablemate Cody Garbrandt in the first round of their UFC 227 headliner on Saturday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Garbrandt succumbed to blows 4:10 into Round 1. Staying technical despite the heated emotions involved, Dillashaw countered his kick-heavy challenger at every turn. He floored Garbrandt with a clean right hook, swarmed for a potential and then reset. Another Dillashaw right -- it landed more like a clothesline than a punch -- had “No Love” teetering on the brink. The champion followed up with punches, allowed Garbrandt to stand and uncorked a knee strike that prompted referee Herb Dean to intervene. In the aftermath of UFC 227 “Dillashaw vs. Garbrandt 2,” here are five matches that ought to be made: Related » Video: UFC 227 Post-Fight Press Conference T.J. Dillashaw vs.

UFC 227: By the Numbers

Consider this score officially settled. T.J. Dillashaw left no doubt as to who owns the rivalry between he and former Team Alpha Male stablemate Cody Garbrandt , as he finished “No Love” for the second time in as many outings in the UFC 227 headliner at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday night. With the win, Dillashaw puts himself in position to be considered among the greatest bantamweights in UFC history -- though he still might have a score to settle with Dominick Cruz . As brilliant as Dillashaw was, it may have been an even bigger night for Henry Cejudo . The Olympic gold medalist ended the lengthy flyweight championship reign of Demetrious Johnson in the evening’s co-headliner, edging “Mighty Mouse” in a tension-filled split-decision triumph. Cejudo could give Johnson an immediate rematch, or he could pursue more gold at 135 pounds. Either way, options appear to be plentiful for “The Messenger.” Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 227, with statistics courtesy of Related » Video: UFC 227 Post-Fight Press Conference 12: Wins in UFC/WEC competition for Dillashaw.

UFC 227 Prelims: Pedro Munhoz, Ricky Simon Grab Unanimous Decision Wins

Dominant win in a wild and exciting fight! @PedroMunhozMMA #UFC227 — #UFC227 (@ufc) August 5, 2018 Brazil’s Pedro Munhoz put on a clinic in the featured UFC 227 preliminary bout on Saturday as he tore apart Brett Johns ’ legs and liver en route to a wipeout unanimous decision win. “The Young Punisher” punished the Welshman’s left leg with kicks early and often so did so much damage that “The Pikey” crumbled on contact multiple times. Munho tried finishing his bantamweight foe with his trademark guillotine on multiple occasions, but Johns (15-2) escaped every attempt. Munhoz nearly finished Johns with kicks to the liver as well, but “The Pikey” was far too tough to succumb to the damage. In the end, Munhoz (16-3) won via tallies of 30-26, 29-28 and 29-27. Related » UFC 227 Round-by-Round Scoring Simon Wrestles Way to Victory Bantamweight contender Ricky Simon used his powerful takedown attack to thwart the much taller Montel Jackson ’s gameplan of trying to strike from the outside. T.J. Dillashaw Retains World Title, Finishes Garbrandt In Round 1 | UFC Results - MMA Imports

The time has finally come. Former UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is now stepping inside the octagon to face off against reigning title holder and heated rival T.J. Dillashaw for a highly anticipated title fight rematch.

Five Lessons Learned from UFC 227

With Henry Cejudo ’s upset of Demetrious Johnson at UFC 227 on Saturday in Los Angeles, history was made. What better subject is there to learn a few lessons from than history? By gaining revenge in his rematch with “Mighty Mouse,” Cejudo became the first-ever Olympic gold medalist to also claim Ultimate Fighting Championship gold. No doubt, the bout was contentious and for most folks came down to how you scored the fifth and final round. Regardless of what your scorecard looked like, there are bigger takeaways for the 125-pound division and the sport on the whole: Things are suddenly looking a lot fresher at flyweight, and in the broader context, don’t be too quick to dismiss a gifted prospect. Of course, Cejudo-Johnson 2 wasn’t the main event of UFC 227, as T.J. Dillashaw retained his bantamweight crown with a first-round knockout of former training partner Cody Garbrandt . How did he do it? Superior technique and strategy, of course. However, what informs Dillashaw’s unique, tricky, high-octane offense that he used to vanquish Garbrandt twice in nine months? Apropos of this column, it’s his approach to learning.

21 T.J. Dillashaw Wants Dominick Cruz to ‘Get to Work’ to Earn UFC Bantamweight Title Shot

One of the most logical next opponents for UFC bantamweight king T.J. Dillashaw would seem to be the last man to defeat him. Not so fast, says the reigning bantamweight king. Even though he relinquished the 135-pound strap to Dominick Cruz in a split-decision defeat some two-and-half years ago, Dillashaw wants to see his old rival do something to earn another title shot. After defeating Dillashaw, Cruz defended the belt against Urijah Faber before losing a five-round verdict to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207. Since then, injuries have kept Cruz on the sideline, and Dillashaw has won four in a row – including back-to-back stoppages of the aforementioned Garbrandt. The latest triumph came via knockout 4:10 into the opening round of the UFC 227 headliner on Saturday night. “I’m not ever afraid of a challenge, but hey, Dominick Cruz hasn’t even fought since he lost the belt. He made me chase around No. 1 contenders, so get to work, Dominick,” Dillashaw said on Fox Sports 1. Unlike his five-round chess match with Cruz, both of Dillashaw’s bouts against Garbrandt have been action-packed but short lived.

Yeah because Cody is terrible defensively. He throws such wide punches, he got clipped exactly like he did in the first fight. It was like a carbon copy. I’ve always noticed that Cody leaves his chin out there when he’s throwing. TJ is too quick and counters too well for that.

“We don’t have time for a world tour,” White said at the UFC 227 post-event press conference, which took place at Staples Center in Los Angeles. “These guys are going to fight the first week of October. UFC 227 Post-Mortem: When Lightning Strikes Twice

Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight titleholder T.J. Dillashaw and Team Alpha Male standout Cody Garbrandt stepped into the cage for a second time in the UFC 227 headliner on Saturday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The rematch saw Garbrandt attempting to avenge his first career defeat and looking to regain the championship he lost to his former stablemate at UFC 217. Dillashaw was clear about his desire to prove he was the best bantamweight in UFC history, and he made a statement to that end with a fast-and-furious first-round knockout. Similar to their first encounter, the two rivals took the center of the Octagon from the start, traded heavy punches and looked to land a kill shot. Dillashaw was first to draw blood, as he caught the challenger with a counter overhand right and drove him to the canvas in a dazed and wobbly state. The champion swarmed on Garbrandt with fast punches in a bid for a quick finish. “No Love” stumbled back to his feet, only to eat another right hand that planted him back on the canvas.

Thiago Santos Teases Move to 205, Fighting at UFC 230 in New York

Heavy-hitting Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight Thiago Santos is coming off a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over debutant Kevin Holland on Saturday night at UFC 227 in Los Angeles. Santos looked to have the better of his opponent early on before Holland kicked into gear landing some nice shots of his own. The win was a confidence boost for Santos’ title aspirations after a devastating knockout loss at the hands of David Branch in his last fight. Santos spoke about his opponent Holland and revealed he’s considering moving up a division as a result of the difficult weight cut to 185 pounds. "Marreta" claimed that his primary focus right now is to get on the UFC 230 card at Madison Square Garden in New York City and that he’s willing to fight anyone to make it happen. “I was aware of this short window when I took the fight," Santos told . I don’t regret it. I took the risk. I took the risk of fighting an unranked UFC debutant. But I love to fight. It’s what I like doing. I don’t choose opponents.

Dana White Explains How ‘Big Mouth’ Kevin Holland Won Him Over at UFC 227

Kevin Holland was a winner on Dana White’s Contender Series earlier this year, but he didn’t initially win over the man for whom the event is named. “He’s a talented guy and he won his fight, but he wouldn’t shut up. The entire fight he was talking to me – the whole fight,” White said at the UFC 227 post-fight press conference… This guy comes in and is talking s—t the entire fight. So I said, ‘I’m not signing this guy. I don’t want him; I’m not interested.’” Holland defeated Will Santiago Jr. via unanimous decision at the UFC Training Center on June 12 for his fourth consecutive win, but the UFC president was true to his word. The 25-year-old known as “Trailblazer” did not initially receive a deal with the Las Vegas-based promotion. Things changed a few weeks later, when veteran knockout artist Thiago Santos was in need of an opponent at UFC 227. While the identity of the Brazilian’s original foe was unclear, only Holland was willing to step in on short notice and face “Marreta.” “Thiago Santos’ fight falls out, and I said, ‘Let’s call some Contender guys that we liked.

Georges St-Pierre would return for Khabib-Conor winner, not Anderson Silva or Nate Diaz

“(Silva doesn’t interest me) right now,” St-Pierre said. “This fight was interesting at a certain point, when I had a lot of contenders in my division. And this fight, if it would have been made, I wanted it to be made with extra performance-enhancing drug testing, which the UFC was not a fan about because they didn’t want WADA to be part of it, before USADA was in. And also at a catchweight – that was my thing. Because as a fighter, it’s very hard to, if you’re an active fighter, competing every few months, to go up, down, up, down – they don’t want to do that. I guess I wanted to do it with extra testing and they didn’t have the testing at the time. That’s why this fight never happened.
