Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Pettis vs. Moreno’

Critics were quick to write off Sergio Pettis as a bust after surprising losses to Alex Caceres and Ryan Benoit . Perhaps they should reconsider their position, if they have not done so already. Pettis continued to build momentum in the Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight division, as he took a unanimous decision from Brandon Moreno in the UFC Fight Night 114 “Pettis vs. Moreno” main event on Saturday at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City. The Roufusport standout swept the scorecards with 49-46, 48-46 and 48-46 marks from the judges and has now equaled the UFC win total (seven) of older brother Anthony Pettis . Met with early adversity, Pettis wandered into serious danger in the first round. There, Moreno executed a takedown and advanced to the back, where he pestered the Milwaukee native with punches while hunting a rear-naked choke. Pettis withstood his advances and spent the next four-plus rounds focused on staying upright and flashing his superior standup skills. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Pettis vs.

Hector Sandoval landed a nice punch to opponent Dustin Ortiz ’ head and that was really the only thing he was able to do. Sandoval charged in with reckless abandonment and wound up running into a perfectly-timed counter right to the face, sending him sprawling backwards and onto the canvas.

Sergio Pettis Continues Flyweight Climb, Overcomes Brandon Moreno at UFC Fight Night 114

No longer in the shadow of his older brother, Sergio Pettis has become a force in the Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight division. The budding Roufusport star pushed his winning streak to four fights with a unanimous decision over Brandon Moreno in the five-round UFC Fight Night 114 “Pettis vs. Moreno” headliner on Saturday at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City. All three cageside judges scored it for Pettis (16-2): 49-46, 48-46 and 48-46. The 23-year-old Milwaukee native now owns a 7-2 record in the UFC. Moreno (14-4) made it difficult. He executed a takedown inside the first minute of the first round, scrambled to the back and threaded his hooks before securing position with a body triangle and pursuing the rear-naked choke. Pettis spent more than four minutes with the Entram Gym standout attached to his back. Nevertheless, he survived. Pettis stayed upright over the next three rounds and carved up Moreno with a stiff jab, chopping right hands and a variety of kicks, one of which opened a cut near the right eye in the middle stanza.

Stacked! UFC Announces Six New Bouts for Upcoming Cards

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has provided some information on an exciting set of new fights for the year’s schedule. This time, the mixed martial arts promotion has come forth with six new bouts for two of the year’s anticipate fight cards.

Vasyl Lomachenko Dazzles Again

Some boxing experts claim that Vasyl Lomachenko might be the finest boxer the sport has ever seen. If that boast is too great, the Ukrainian may be best of this generation and he showed why yet again on Saturday night inside Microsoft Theater at LA Live in Los Angeles. Lomachenko improved to 9-1 by scoring his seventh pro knockout when he tormented veteran Miguel Marriaga for seven rounds. As usual, Lomachenko was nearly impossible to hit for much of the contest and his surgical precision was as deadly as ever. The two-time Olympic gold medalist dropped the Colombian with a left hook and then systematically picked him apart from the outside. Lomachenko suffered a cut over his eye in the fourth from an accidental clash of heads, but that just served to fuel “Hi=Tech” even further. Lomachenko was in such command that the European phenom toyed with his foe, showboated and then raked him clean punches to the head and body. When Lomachenko dropped Marriaga (25-3, 21 KOs) with another left in the seventh, the withered contender plodded back to his corner after the round. From there, his corner had seen enough and halted the ESPN-televised contest.

Despite big win over Brandon Moreno, Sergio Pettis doesn't want "Mighty Mouse" next |

Last night, the UFC touched down in sun-soaked Mexico City, Mexico, with an exciting night of fights. In the main event, we were treated to a clash of young flyweight contenders, as Duke Roufus trained Sergio Pettis took on Mexico’s own Brandon Moreno. Though both fighters are very young – both 23 years old – this looked like it could be a flyweight number one contender fight, with the winner earning a shot at incredibly dominant champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

Paige VanZant vs. Jessica Eye at Flyweight In the Works for UFC 216 |

As of now, several fights have been confirmed for UFC 216 in October but the event is still without an main event as of now. The card will take place on Oct. 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Glover Teixeira to Fight Misha Cirkunov at UFC Fight Night 119 in October

The Ultimate Fighting Championship revealed that a pivotal light heavyweight showdown will anchor UFC Fight Night 119 on Oct. 28 in Brazil. Glover Teixeira will go head-to-head with Misha Cirkunov at Ginasio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo. The announcement came during Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 114 “Pettis vs. Moreno” card in Mexico City. Both Teixeira and Cirkunov need to get back on track as they both suffered losses in their previous outing. Teixeira, who will be fighting in front of his fellow Brazilians, was knocked out in brutal fashion at the hands of Alexander Gustafsson in May while Cirkunov was torched by Volkan Oezdemir in just 28 seconds on the same card. UFC Fight Night 119 will mark the sixth time the promotion has ventured into Brazil’s most populace city. Additional bouts will be announced in the coming weeks.

Opinion: Patience is a Virtue

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * There’s a right way and a wrong way to win. More to the point, there’s a right way and a wrong way to answer the inevitable post-fight question: Who’s next? “Whoever the UFC puts in front of me” is invariably the worst and most boring answer; if you’re looking to climb the ranks, calling out nobody tacitly admits that you are, in fact, also a nobody. The name of the game is to gain fans and build storylines, and no one has ever been interested by or attracted to wimpy compliance. It’s slightly better to narrow it down to “someone in the top 10,” but again, that’s not going to get anyone talking, and in the current climate of matchmaking, getting people to talk goes a long way. The best bet is to have a name ready. If fans respond to that name, it’s one of the most powerful ways a fighter can take the reins of his or her career.

UFC Fight Night 114 Bonuses: Ortiz, Morales, Bandenay, Price Pocket $50K

With UFC Fight Night 114 “Pettis vs. Moreno” tying a modern-era record with seven first-round stoppages, it likely was a difficult choice for the promotional brass to narrow the post-fight bonuses to just four fighters. The Ultimate Fighting Championship opted not to award a battle with the “Fight of the Night” honors and instead handed out the bonus money to four fighters who all earned the coveted “Performance of the Night” award. Dustin Ortiz blew away Hector Sandoval in just 15 seconds, which was the fastest finish in UFC flyweight history. Sandoval charged right at Ortiz, who countered with a blistering right-left to the noggin, dropping his foe. Sandoval had no chance of surviving as Ortiz pounded on him with hammerfists until he was yanked away by the ref. Joseph Morales struggled early against fellow flyweight Roberto Sanchez , but he rallied once he got the fight back to the feet. From there, Morales sent shockwaves throughout Sanchez’ nervous system with a right to the temple and then latched onto his back. Moments later, Sanchez was tapping out to a textbook rear-naked choke.

Mikhail Zayats Outduels Marcus Vanttinen in M-1 Challenge 82 Main Event

M-1 Global returned to Finland after a nine-year absence to promote M-1 Challenge 82 on Saturday at Hartwell Arena in Helsinki. It was the first MMA event to be held at the facility, which serves as the largest ice hockey arena in the country. Mikhail Zayats returned from a three-year absence to outpoint Marcus Vanttinen in the main event. Vanttinen was on a two-year layoff of his own. Zayats carried all three scorecards, using takedowns in every round while damaging the “Caveman” in a slow-paced bout that gave local fans little reason to cheer. “Don’t call it a comeback,” Zayats said. “I have always been here.” Heliton dos Santos Davila showed off his impressive top game in the co-headliner, as he landed punches on fan favorite Janne Elonen-Kulmala for much of the first round. The Finn found his groove in the second, where he landed a solid left hand that sent dos Santos’ mouthpiece flying. “Jamba” took control with his grappling, but his momentum stalled on a takedown from dos Santos. A strong final round for the Brazilian seemed to lock up a victory, but the judges saw it as a split draw.

Last night, the UFC returned to sun-soaked Mexico City, Mexico with an exciting night of fights. While the main card was of course the focal point of the event, the undercard produced plenty of excitement too. One of the more exciting moments of this undercard occurred in an interesting flyweight bout between Dustin Ortiz and Hector Sandoval.

Even in Las Vegas, the barriers of Dublin still press against Conor McGregor

Even as someone like McGregor is rising, his fall feels close enough to touch. Nearly all famous fighters end up back where they started, busted, a punch-drunk eulogy to their inability to escape whatever first drove them to fight. McGregor brags he's gonna eat lobster for the rest of his life while his critics and opponents will eat their words. Maybe that's true. When you meet him, and see the pride in his eyes when he talks of giving his newborn son a different kind of life, you want it to be true. He's making lots of money, and spending lots of money, and the thing his family and friends fear most isn't the next opponent but the moment when he no longer has an opponent, when the engine of his focus goes cold. Cautionary tales abound. He has gotten financial advice from Mike Tyson. He's fighting a man named Money who can't pay his taxes. His flight into Vegas took him directly over the parched cemetery where Sonny Liston is buried beneath fake flowers, after dying broke and an alleged junkie. Liston said once, "Someday, they're gonna write a blues song just for fighters. It'll be for slow guitar, soft trumpet and a bell.

Former World Champion Timothy Bradley Retires from Boxing

“There always comes a point in life where we have to make choices that no matter how much we know the right option, it still leaves us filled with mixed emotions. I have spent the past couple days trying to find the right words to describe this point in my life and no matter how long I sit and reflect, I still don’t know if these words can do my thoughts justice, but I’m going to do my best to open up my heart and share with all of you during this pivotal time. It is no secret that a life of any professional athlete is not an easy one- yes it comes with a lot of fame and fortune but also comes with fear and fatigue. A balance that has to be achieved by ambition and maintained through perspective. For over 23 years, Boxing gave me purpose and it defined me. Dedicated to my craft and fueled by my passion for the sport, my love for my team and my admiration for all of you who supported me day in and day out– I was able to give 100% of myself to be the best and to always get up when I was knocked down. It was the biggest challenge in my life but I embraced the sacrifice with every victory and milestone reached.

NSAC Director Breaks His Silence on Approving #MayMac

Bob Bennett, director of the Nevada State athletic Commission (NSAC), opted to regulate the highly anticipated cross-promotional match up between UFC champion Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. While the decision may have gone over well with many MMA fans, the boxing community appears a little more divided on the director’s decision.
