These deep stat dives delve into the numbers, providing historical context and telling the stories behind those numbers. * * * TOTAL NUMBER OF UFC FIGHTS: 4,765 TOTAL NUMBER OF UFC EVENTS: 448 * * * Returning to Los Angeles for the fifth time, the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday brought two major title rematches and high drama to the Staples Center. UFC 227 featured the second biggest betting upset inside the Octagon this year, a fighter who has earned a quarter of all post-fight bonuses awarded to his entire division and a Brazilian contender who only needs one way to finish his opponents. Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Oh, Henry

For the first time in nearly six years, someone other than Demetrious Johnson has taken up residence in the flyweight penthouse. Henry Cejudo leaned on takedowns and top control, as he captured the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight title with a split decision over Johnson in the UFC 227 co-headliner on Aug. 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. All three cageside judges scored it 48-47: Sal D’Amato and Ron McCarthy for Cejudo, Marcos Rosales for Johnson. The loss snapped a 13-fight winning streak for “Mighty Mouse” and brought an end to his historic reign atop the 125-pound weight class at 2,142 days. Cejudo’s upset makes the 2008 Olympic gold medalist the No. 1 flyweight in the latest divisional rankings, while Johnson falls to No. 2. Meanwhile, T.J. Dillashaw strengthened his claim as perhaps the greatest bantamweight of all-time, as he knocked out Cody Garbrandt in the first round of their rematch and retained his championship in the main event. Since his controversial split decision defeat to Dominick Cruz in January 2016, Dillashaw has beaten Raphael Assuncao , John Lineker and Garbrandt (twice) in succession.

Geek for Technique: Best Moves at UFC 227 (Prelims)

UFC 227 was one for the history books on Saturday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, as it marked the end of some heated rivalries and perhaps the beginning of others. The prelims served as a showcase for young talent -- the focus of the latest installment of the Geek for Technique series. Marlon Vera took on Wuliji Buren at 135 pounds. Buren surprisingly controlled most of the first round, but Vera picked up the pace in the second and took home a victory by technical knockout. Late in the middle stanza, Vera trapped Buren against the cage and mixed hooks to the head and body before dropping him with a left hook to the liver. When the Ultimate Fighting Championship signed a wave of new female talent earlier this year, some names popped up as future title contenders. Fighters like Mackenzie Dern and Molly McCann stole the headlines, but few mentioned one of the better prospects to arrive in years: Weili Zhang. The Chinese strawweight faced Danielle Taylor in her promotional debut and dominated much of the fight with lead-hand strikes.

Dana White: 'No problem' if Eddie Alvarez wants to finish career outside UFC

“At the end of the day, what we’re looking for here are young guys that want to be world champions,” White said. “Young guys that know they can be a world champion in the UFC. Or girls that know they can be a world champion in the UFC. If you feel that you can’t be and you feel there’s a better decision you can make at this point in your career for the last contract you’ll ever sign, I absolutely understand that.”

Joseph Benavidez vs. Ray Borg booked for UFC Denver – not UFC 229

Benavidez, No. 5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA flyweight rankings , had a six-fight winning streak snapped in June when he dropped a split decision to Sergio Pettis at UFC 225 in Chicago. The fight was Benavidez’s long-awaited return after 18 months off due to surgery, rehab and recovery. Benavidez had but four losses prior to that in 29 fights, and to just two opponents: former UFC and WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and two title shots against Demetrious Johnson, who this past Saturday lost the flyweight belt after holding it for nearly six years.

UFC 227 Proves Favoritism Can Be a Double-Edged Sword

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * A little over nine months ago at a press event held at the iconic Madison Square Garden, Cody Garbrandt sat on stage as one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s handpicked brand ambassadors for the company’s partnership with sports-nutrition company Bodyarmor . It was 10 months after he’d lifted the 135-pound title from Dominick Cruz in a stunning upset at UFC 207, and “No Love” was waxing lyrical with NBA legend and Bodyarmor shareholder Kobe Bryant about what it meant to be a championship athlete. It had been a good year for the Team Alpha Male export. Coming into his fight opposite “The Dominator” on New Year’s Eve, few pundits believed Garbrandt possessed more than a puncher’s chance; the conventional wisdom was that he was too young, too inexperienced and too emotional to pose a serious threat to the longtime king .

Georges St-Pierre would return for Khabib-Conor winner, not Anderson Silva or Nate Diaz

“(Silva doesn’t interest me) right now,” St-Pierre said. “This fight was interesting at a certain point, when I had a lot of contenders in my division. And this fight, if it would have been made, I wanted it to be made with extra performance-enhancing drug testing, which the UFC was not a fan about because they didn’t want WADA to be part of it, before USADA was in. And also at a catchweight – that was my thing. Because as a fighter, it’s very hard to, if you’re an active fighter, competing every few months, to go up, down, up, down – they don’t want to do that. I guess I wanted to do it with extra testing and they didn’t have the testing at the time. That’s why this fight never happened.

UFC 227 Post-Mortem: When Lightning Strikes Twice

Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight titleholder T.J. Dillashaw and Team Alpha Male standout Cody Garbrandt stepped into the cage for a second time in the UFC 227 headliner on Saturday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The rematch saw Garbrandt attempting to avenge his first career defeat and looking to regain the championship he lost to his former stablemate at UFC 217. Dillashaw was clear about his desire to prove he was the best bantamweight in UFC history, and he made a statement to that end with a fast-and-furious first-round knockout. Similar to their first encounter, the two rivals took the center of the Octagon from the start, traded heavy punches and looked to land a kill shot. Dillashaw was first to draw blood, as he caught the challenger with a counter overhand right and drove him to the canvas in a dazed and wobbly state. The champion swarmed on Garbrandt with fast punches in a bid for a quick finish. “No Love” stumbled back to his feet, only to eat another right hand that planted him back on the canvas.

Greg Hardy Annihilates Tebaris Gordon on DWTNCS; UFC Awards Three Contracts

Welp, Greg Hardy (2-0) looked frightening tonight. The rightly-maligned former NFL star obliterates Tebaris Gordon in 17 seconds. #DWTNCS — Tanuki Usman (@Hamderlei) August 8, 2018 Greg Hardy can sling some leather. The disgraced former NFL all-pro destroyed Tebaris Gordon in the first round of their heavyweight feature on Season 2, Week 8 of Dana White’s Contender Series on Tuesday at the UFC Training Center in Las Vegas. Gordon (3-1) succumbed to punches 17 seconds into Round 1. Hardy (2-0) showed no regard for his adversary’s skills. He marched across the Octagon and let his hands go. Gordon did what he could to answer back, but the difference in speed, power and athleticism between the two heavyweights was massive. Hardy connected with a right hand as he flurried, dropped the North Carolinian and closed it out. The 30-year-old Hardy will remain on a developmental deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship . A winner on season one of the Contender Series, Kennedy Nzechukwu (6-0) returns with a first-round KO of Dennis Bryant! Standing 6'5" with an 82" reach, the Nigerian-American has finished four of six by knockout.

Video: Khabib Nurmagomedov Pays Homeless to do Pushups

What are your thoughts on this video posted by Khabib of him and his cousin paying homeless people to do press ups for money... Personally we feel it's disgusting and degrading.. Especially them constantly laughing at those involved.. — The MMA Bible (@TheMMABible) August 6, 2018 Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov posted video of himself and a cousin paying what seems to be homeless people to do push-ups, just days after his blockbuster title fight against Conor McGregor was announced. The UFC champion and his cohorts can be heard laughing and giggling as Khabib offers cash to several homeless men, but only under the condition that they do some push-ups first. Nurmagomedov and McGregor will headline UFC 229 on Oct. 6 for the undefeated Dagestani’s lightweight title.

Joe Rogan argues extreme weight-cutting is a worse form of cheating than PEDs |

“It is stupid,” Rogan said on his podcast the Joe Rogan Experience (transcript via MMAMania ). “What it is is sanctioned cheating. It’s sanctioned cheating and it’s cheating at a much higher scale even than PEDs. If you get two people and they both weigh 135 [pounds] but they’re both totally hydrated and one of them has been doing steroids and one of them hasn’t been doing steroids, the difference will be far less than if one person weighs in at 135 [pounds] but then balloons up to 160 [pounds] and then gets into that octagon at 160 [pounds] but there’s no PEDs involved. That’s a  much  greater advantage than someone whose doing some sort of testosterone thing or something. They’re compromised but the benefit of being so much larger might outweigh being compromised.

18’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Demetrious Johnson sat on the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s flyweight throne for 2,142 days -- a historic reign that covered a record 11 title defenses against 10 different opponents and cast him as one of the sport’s pound-for-pound power players. None of it mattered to Henry Cejudo . A little more than two years after being soundly defeated by “Mighty Mouse,” Cejudo made the most of his opportunity in their rematch. The 2008 Olympic gold medalist captured the undisputed flyweight championship with a split decision over Johnson in the UFC 227 co-headliner on Aug. 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, mere miles from where he was born. Cejudo counteracted Johnson’s advantages in the standup department -- he was outstruck 121-80 in total strikes and 81-51 in significant strikes -- with takedowns and top control in the second, fourth and fifth rounds, where he bottled up “Mighty Mouse” and kept his prodigious offensive skills at bay. The loss snapped Johnson’s 13-fight winning streak and pushed him from second to eighth in the latest Sherdog pound-for-pound rankings.

T.J. Dillashaw Wants Dominick Cruz to ‘Get to Work’ to Earn UFC Bantamweight Title Shot

One of the most logical next opponents for UFC bantamweight king T.J. Dillashaw would seem to be the last man to defeat him. Not so fast, says the reigning bantamweight king. Even though he relinquished the 135-pound strap to Dominick Cruz in a split-decision defeat some two-and-half years ago, Dillashaw wants to see his old rival do something to earn another title shot. After defeating Dillashaw, Cruz defended the belt against Urijah Faber before losing a five-round verdict to Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207. Since then, injuries have kept Cruz on the sideline, and Dillashaw has won four in a row – including back-to-back stoppages of the aforementioned Garbrandt. The latest triumph came via knockout 4:10 into the opening round of the UFC 227 headliner on Saturday night. “I’m not ever afraid of a challenge, but hey, Dominick Cruz hasn’t even fought since he lost the belt. He made me chase around No. 1 contenders, so get to work, Dominick,” Dillashaw said on Fox Sports 1. Unlike his five-round chess match with Cruz, both of Dillashaw’s bouts against Garbrandt have been action-packed but short lived.

Report: Benavidez vs. Borg, Kunitskaya vs. Lansberg Set For UFC 229 in Las Vegas

Since the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced arguably the year’s biggest fight between current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former champion Conor McGregor at UFC 229 on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas, the rest of card has begun to take shape quickly. According to a number of reports, Joseph Benavidez is set to take on Ray Borg at flyweight while former Invicta FC bantamweight champion Yana Kunitskaya will meet Lina Lansberg . MMA Nytt first reported the flyweight fight between Benavidez and Borg and reported the matchup between Kunitskaya and Lansberg. Although at the time of publishing, these bouts have not been officially confirmed by the UFC. Benavidez was riding a six-fight winning streak before losing a split decision to Sergio Pettis in June at UFC 225 in Chicago. It was the first fight for Benavidez after 18 months off due to surgery, rehab and recovery. Borg’s last fight inside the Octagon was a submission loss to former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 216 in October of last year.

Five Lessons Learned from UFC 227

With Henry Cejudo ’s upset of Demetrious Johnson at UFC 227 on Saturday in Los Angeles, history was made. What better subject is there to learn a few lessons from than history? By gaining revenge in his rematch with “Mighty Mouse,” Cejudo became the first-ever Olympic gold medalist to also claim Ultimate Fighting Championship gold. No doubt, the bout was contentious and for most folks came down to how you scored the fifth and final round. Regardless of what your scorecard looked like, there are bigger takeaways for the 125-pound division and the sport on the whole: Things are suddenly looking a lot fresher at flyweight, and in the broader context, don’t be too quick to dismiss a gifted prospect. Of course, Cejudo-Johnson 2 wasn’t the main event of UFC 227, as T.J. Dillashaw retained his bantamweight crown with a first-round knockout of former training partner Cody Garbrandt . How did he do it? Superior technique and strategy, of course. However, what informs Dillashaw’s unique, tricky, high-octane offense that he used to vanquish Garbrandt twice in nine months? Apropos of this column, it’s his approach to learning.

Dana White wonders if Francis Ngannou will ever get back on track after he 'lost his mind'

“Francis Ngannou at the time he was coming up, I believed this guy was going to be the guy, was going to be the heavyweight champion,” White said on the  “UFC Unfiltered” podcast . “He lost his mind. This guy completely lost his mind and started to act – I don’t know – in a way you just don’t act. I completely saw it coming. Obviously Francis Ngannou is a massive, strong, hard-hitting guy, and anything can happen when he gets in there, but Stipe had this thing where he feels completely disrespected. Douglas Lima and the Unshakable Thought of One More Kick

Bellator MMA plans to stage a welterweight grand prix , starting at Bellator 206 on Sept. 29. Excitement surrounds the tournament for fans, observers and the participants, including former welterweight titleholder Douglas Lima . However, his enthusiasm is tinged with regret, as he feels he should be entering the draw as the defending champion, not as one of nine other contenders. Lima’s unanimous decision loss to Rory MacDonald on Jan. 20 still haunts him. “One more kick was all I needed,” he told, “because the man could barely walk.” Lima peppered the Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran’s left leg with vicious low kicks throughout the first four rounds of the fight. The impacts raised a gruesome hematoma on MacDonald’s shin and left him with a leg that was too weak to stand on. Lima sensed the proverbial blood in the water and admits overzealousness got the best of him. “I think I was too hungry for the finish that I rushed in [and] I pretty much gave him the takedown,” he said. “I knew I had him.

Kevin Hart, Tony Robbins Among New Professional Fighters League Investors

Mark Burnett, Kevin Hart, Tony Robbins Invest in MMA Startup Professional Fighters League — Variety (@Variety) August 8, 2018 The Professional Fighters League ’s pockets just got a lot deeper after several high profile investors, including the likes of comedian Kevin Hart and life coach Tony Robbins, announced a $28 million investment in the playoffs-based mixed martial arts outfit. PFL, which changed its name from World Series of Fighting last year, has differentiated itself from the likes of Bellator MMA and the Ultimate Fighting Championship by holding point-based regular seasons with a $1 million grand prize for each divisional finalist. The league has a television deal with NBC Sports and has steadily gained the attention of more casual MMA fans over the last few months. With that added attention comes more willing investors; Hart and Robbins are joined by fellow PFL investors Mark Burnett, Chairman of Worldwide Television Group MGM, Ted Leonsis, majority owner of NHL 2018 Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals and NBA Washington Wizards, among others.
