UFC Fight Night 73: Saint Preux vs. Teixeira results and post-fight analysis

Johnson clearly won that fight. It was about as obvious as you're going to get. If you want to give Dariush round three, I'd debate it but I wouldn't put that much into it. But the second? There's absolutely no way in hell that Dariush won the first or second round. The first is obvious - Johnson dropped him. In the second, Johnson's pressure game was working to perfection and he was out-landing his opponent. He was also landing the harder shots. There is no way to plausibly give Dariush the advantage in an all-striking round where he wasn't landing on or hurting his opponent enough. It's a joke.

UFC Fight Night 73: Beneil Dariush vs. Michael Johnson video highlights

Dariush (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) was given the win with scores of 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28. The victory shocked seemingly everyone as it appeared as though Johnson (16-9 MMA, 8-5 UFC) had earned the victory after seeming to dominate the fight. Instead of things going Johnson’s way, Dariush is now riding a five-fight winning streak.

From bad decisions to justifiable stoppages, seven thoughts on UFC Fight Night 73

But, sorry, you’re not going to convince me that Johnson didn’t win the first two rounds. He out-struck Dariush in both those rounds, was the more aggressive fighter throughout, and easily shrugged off Dariush’s takedown attempts. And please, let us no more of this “don’t leave it in the hands of the judges” nonsense. Three rounds isn’t enough time in which to finish every single fight, especially against an opponent who decided he didn’t want to engage much after getting dropped by a hard left early on. This was one of those times where Johnson should have been able to depend on sound judging. Guess he didn’t know that judge Doug Crosby was in the house, doing that thing he does.

Nunes has been hovering around the top 10 at bantamweight for several years, but each time she got close to title contention, the bottom dropped out from under her. Tyron Woodley joins The Weigh-In

Okamoto:  Yeah, I'm not sure one is more to blame than the other at the moment. What I will say is that if Justino wants this fight, she has to make an effort to cut to 135 pounds. That's not really fair, but life isn't fair, and right now Rousey is the clear A-side to this matchup. Justino needs Rousey more than vice versa, so the pressure is on her to make the weight. If she makes the effort and it really just can't be done, then all the pressure shifts to Rousey, in my opinion. "OK Ronda, Justino tried but she literally, physically can't make it. Are you really going to potentially retire without making this fight?" At that point, if the fight didn't happen, it would be fair to say it was Rousey's doing. I have long believed if it came down to that, Rousey would go up in weight to make the fight happen. For now though, the ball is in Justino's court.

The Hit List: The Top 5 Moments from UFC Fight Night - Teixeira vs. Saint Preux

Rather, he chose to never consciously stop fighting. There is certainly no shame in tapping out in MMA -- that cultural acceptance of acknowledging defeat and giving in to avoid more damage is a big part of what makes the sport safer than boxing, for example -- but it is also fine to recognize and applaud the type of fighting spirit and pride that Saint Preux showed in the final seconds of his bout.

Condit vs. Lawler Is a Nice Surprise

I am pissed. You fight and you do the right things and then you get jumped. What do I need to do to stay relevant? What do I need to do to get back to that title? You’re sitting there and you’re going through all these things. Don’t get me wrong, I am still mad, but again, what can I do? The only thing I can do is go out there and train hard and get another win ... you just start beating everybody then next thing you know, there’s going to be nobody left but me.

UFC Fight Night: Saint Preux vs. Teixeira staff picks and predictions

Phil Mackenzie : And lo, it was that the great and generic tribes of Middleweight did divide themselves. Firstly there were those who lived by the gospel of the jab, the one-two and the leg kick. Their lord was Bisping of Manchester, and they would become the Powerless Volume Punchers. Then there were those with a working man's approach, those who believed a bit more in their power, who would get really tired and sweaty but still keep punching. They were the Blue Collar Scrappers, and their king was Boetsch the Barbarian (tho' there were those such as Sam the Smiler and Scott Coal-heart who did dream traitorous dreams of o'erthrowing him). Finally there were those who would clinch, and go for takedowns and not generally complete them, and they would be the BJJ Guys With Suspect Gas Tanks. First among them was Natal the Born, until the Prodigal Leites returned from the wilderness to claim his place at their head. Their subjects were curs'd to fight one another, to struggle for a dominion none could achieve because they're not very good. Curs'd also to have all who watch them forget their fights: before, after and sometimes during.
