Imagining the UFC Champions as Rap Albums, Part 1

If MMA was music, it would have to be rap. Not only is individualism at the forefront of the sport and the genre, but both encompass a unique aesthetic that blends gritty toughness with technical artistry; the word “art” is one-third of MMA, and if we are being honest, rap at its best is everything poetry wishes to be. It is only right then to anoint the greatest MMA fighters in each division by comparing them to the rap albums that best encapsulate their fighting styles, personalities and careers. Before the Ultimate Fighting Championship title picture reshuffles any more, here is part one, which covers featherweight down to women’s strawweight:   Conor McGregor: “Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous” | Big L (1995) As tempting as it is to pair McGregor with his “Notorious” namesake, there is a better “Big” fit for him. McGregor is not just a brash personality who took pre-fight trash talk to the next level; he is also one of the best, purest punchers in the game. The power in his hands is undeniable, but do not let that fool you.

Chinzo Machida Promotional Debut Booked for Bellator 160 on Aug. 26

Chinzo Machida , the older brother of former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder Lyoto Machida , will make his Bellator MMA debut opposite Mario Navarro in a Bellator 160 prelim on Aug. 26 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Bellator officials on Monday announced the featherweight booking. Machida, 39, will enter the cage on a modest two-fight winning streak. He has not fought since he was awarded a unanimous decision over Dmitry Gerasimov under the Resurrection Fighting Alliance banner in June 2014. He agreed to terms with Bellator six months later. Though Machida’s involvement in MMA has been sporadic, the Shotokan karate black belt made himself a fixture on highlight reels with his flying knee knockout on Brian Wood at RFA 11 in 2013. Navarro has lost four of his past five bouts, including two straight. Like Machida, he faces the hurdle of a lengthy layoff, as the Californian last competed at Bellator 116 in April 2014, when he submitted to a rear-naked choke from Brandon Bender .

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Rodriguez vs. Caceres’

Volume and pace can be formidable weapons in capable hands. Case in point: Yair Rodriguez . “The Ultimate Fighter Latin America” winner remained undefeated in Ultimate Fighting Championship competition, as he walked out of his UFC Fight Night 92 main event against Alex Caceres with a split decision on Saturday at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Salt Lake City. Two of the three judges saw it for Rodriguez, 48-47 and 48-47, while a third gave Caceres an eyebrow-raising 49-46 nod. According to FightMetric data, Rodriguez threw 141 more strikes than “Bruce Leeroy,” found the mark with nearly twice as many (124 to 65) and connected at a higher clip, 35 percent to 31. He out-landed Caceres in the significant strikes department in all five rounds. Broken down further, Rodriguez utilized significantly more variety, outscoring the MMA Lab representative to the head, body and legs. “Pantera” maintained a ridiculous work rate, cutting loose with more strikes (89) over the final five minutes than he did in any other round. Caceres was at his best in the middle stanza, as he swarmed with punches, ripped a knee to the body and scrambled into top position, crouching above Rodriguez before unleashing his ground-and-pound.

Tyron Woodley: Georges St-Pierre wants to fight me for the welterweight title

“I’ve already spoken to the lineal champion, the No. 1 welterweight, the pound-for-pound one of the greatest in the sport. His interest is fighting me,” Woodley said. “Georges St-Pierre wants to fight me. And guess what? I want to fight him. There’s honor in it. If I’m going to put it on the line, risk it, I want to know that I at least had the opportunity to prove to myself that I am the best welterweight to ever grace the damn Octagon, and if he’s going to give me that chance, I can give a hell less.”

The Bottom Line: Bring on the High Elevation

With 20 seconds left in the second round of his bout at UFC Fight Night “Rodriguez vs. Caceres” on Saturday in Salt Lake City, an exhausted Chase Sherman bent over and stuck out his tongue. After having some success early in his fight with Justin Ledet , Sherman hit a wall. His offensive output slowed to a crawl, and his lack of movement made him an easy target. As a result, Ledet began picking him apart with boxing, and there was nothing Sherman could do about it. He lacked the energy to respond with consistent offense of his own, so he defiantly stuck out his tongue. It was Sherman’s way of making clear to Ledet: I may be too tired to answer back, but you haven’t taken my spirit. UFC Fight Night 92, much like previous outings in Mexico City and Denver, was defined in significant measure by the altitude. Fighters slowed quicker than usual, and longer fights inevitably turned into wars of attrition. The most famous example of the effects of altitude was the UFC 188 heavyweight title fight in Mexico City between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum .

Michal Materla-Rousimar Palhares Showdown to Headline KSW 36 on Oct. 1

Former Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki middleweight champion Michal Materla will face mercurial Brazilian grappler Rousimar Palhares in the KSW 36 main event on Oct. 1 at the Sport and Entertainment Hall in Zielona Gora, Poland, In the co-headliner, Tomasz Narkun will defend his KSW light heavyweight crown against Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pride Fighting Championships veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou . Materla, 32, boasts 17 finishes among his 23 pro victories. He last fought at KSW 35 on May 27, when he rebounded from his 31-second knockout loss to Mamed Khalidov to dispose of Antoni Chmielewski with first-round punches. Wins over Jay Silva (twice), Kendall Grove , Rodney Wallace , Matt Horwich and Tomasz Drwal anchor his resume. Palhares looks to have accepted his role as a hired gun after being stripped of the World Series of Fighting welterweight championship a little more than a year ago. The 36-year-old Brazilian saw his four-fight winning streak come to a halt in shocking fashion at a Venator Fighting Championship event in May, as he was on the receiving end of a 45-second knockout loss to Emil Weber Meek .

The Savage Truth: Association of Boxing Commissions’ High Drama

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** Tuesday's session at the Association of Boxing Commissions’ annual convention was surreal at best and chaotic at worst. A committee of regulators, fighters and referees put in hours and hours of work to come up with a list of modifications to the Unified Rules of MMA and those proposals were whittled down to a smaller set of changes by the medical advisory committee, comprised of some of the top ringside physicians in the country. These changes were set to be voted on Tuesday in Las Vegas. It seemed like a simple task but if I’ve learned anything over the last seven years I’ve been attending the ABC's annual conference, it's that whenever you get a bunch of regulators in one room, be prepared for the unexpected. When the voting members were asked if they were ready to call for a motion, California's Executive Officer Andy Foster asked for a 10-minute recess.

Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz Focused on UFC 202 Rematch, Envision Possible Trilogy

Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have begun to fan the flames for their forthcoming rematch. McGregor will meet Diaz in the UFC 202 main event on Aug. 20 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where he will try to avenge his rear-naked choke submission loss to “The Ultimate Fighter 5” winner. Diaz tapped the Irishman in the second round of their UFC 196 encounter in March, and McGregor vowed to learn from his mistakes. “I feel absolutely amazing. I’ve prepared phenomenal,” McGregor said on Friday during a pre-fight media call. “I did not give enough credit to Nate’s durability and his experience. He has more fights in the UFC than I do [total] fights. Also, [you have] his height and his range and his reactions, and I gave no respect to that. For the first two rounds, he was a heavy bag -- and I was correct in [thinking that] -- but his durability held out. I’ve been preparing for that, and I feel very confident that I can put this man away.” McGregor claimed to have walked away from lucrative opportunities outside the cage in order to prepare for his rematch with Diaz.

Opinion: Does Unpredictability Hurt UFC’s Mainstream Appeal?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** Tyron Woodley ’s first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 made him the seventh new Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder in less than a year. As someone who was considered undeserving of a title shot, Woodley adds his name to a growing list of underdogs who have emphatically proved the naysayers wrong. Does this recent string of title changes and unpredictability bode well for the UFC in the long run? Sure, it’s fun to see that anybody can beat a world champion on any given night; and that hasn’t been clearer than in the past year, as world champions have fallen at a frightening rate against opponents that few thought could usurp them. However, is there any such thing as an “upset” anymore considering how frequently titles have been changing hands? Do the titles mean much of anything anymore considering that nobody can hang on to them long enough to establish themselves as true champions? What we love about mixed martial arts can also be its biggest detriment: unpredictability.

Tachi Palace Fights 28 Weigh-in Results: Only Navarro Will Fight for Title

Tachi Palace Fights 28 goes down live Thursday night and will be streamed live right here on The action will go live starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT from inside the Tachi Palace Hotel Casino in Lemoore, Calif., and the card will be anchored by two championship fights. In the main event, Brian Cobb was supposed to take on Danny Navarro for the vacant TPF lightweight title, but at Wednesday’s weigh-ins, all hell broke loose. Navarro was ready and trim as he came in right on the money at 155 pounds. But Cobb missed badly. After taking the fight on just three weeks’ notice, he tried his best to cut down from about 185 pounds but didn’t come close; he weighed in at 169.1 pounds. Because of that, if Navarro wins, he’ll be crowned the lightweight champ but if Cobb gets his hand raised, the title will remain vacant. The co-feature was supposed to be Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Jared Papazian opposing Casey Kenney for the vacant flyweight title. But just like the main event, there was controversy. Papazian came in five pounds over the 125-pound limit and since Kenney was on the mark, he and his camp opted not to fight.

Coach: McGregor ‘Must Be Dominant’ vs. Diaz in ‘Game-Changer’ Bout at UFC 202

Conor McGregor coach John Kavanagh believes his star pupil has learned from his loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 and will put those lessons to good use in their rematch on Aug. 20. According to the SBG Ireland boss, the preparation for UFC 202 has followed a different formula than previous camps. “The word we’ve been focusing on for this camp is ‘routine’. We basically did the same thing every day since we arrived in Vegas: Leave the house to go to the gym for a skill session at 1 p.m., before working on cardio in the evenings,” Kavanagh wrote in a blog on . “We’ve been following that pattern now for what feels like a long time — about 19 weeks in total come fight night. Although it seems like it has been a long process, we’re definitely seeing the fruits of our labor. There are certain fitness tests that we have numbers on, and the improvements from when Conor began to where he is now have been dramatic. “There’s no comparing this training camp to any we have done previously. I can’t stress enough how different this has been.

Coach John Kavanagh: There will be 'no excuses' if Conor McGregor can't beat Nate Diaz at UFC 202

Second chances don’t come around often in life, but Kavanagh will get one on Aug. 20 when McGregor is set to rematch Diaz at UFC 202, which takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass. Kavanagh claims he’s left no stone unturned in getting “The Notorious” prepared for the fight, and if the outcome is not what he anticipates, he said there will be no excuses and he would take it as an indictment on his ability as a coach.

"I've fought everybody in the UFC, been fighting forever. So if I'm going fight, it's going to be for a big-deal fight, not just a fight," Diaz said. "I was ahead of everybody as far as a following in the UFC, I was the biggest draw, I was the biggest everything in every weight class. Ahead of Nash's forthcoming series of articles for BloodyElbow analyzing recently disclosed purses in both MMA and boxing, he and Breen discuss his findings after comparing reported paydays in California, Florida and Nevada last year, the impact Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao have on the average boxing purse, the curious way in which the UFC inflates mid-tier fighter salaries against market value and what impact the Muhammad Ali Act would have on the politics of fighter pay if adopted for MMA. Breen and Nash also talk about the concept of competition between promoters in both MMA and boxing, the surprising fact that the UFC's ostensible competition aren't actually competing against the industry leader the way that people think and how boxing's plethora of sanctioning bodies and proliferation of “world titles” actually helps boxers make big bank. 10 August Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and the World Series of Fighting. *** Gesias Cavalcante ’s best days may be behind him, but if recent results are any indication, he still has plenty left in the tank. Cavalcante will defend the Titan Fighting Championship lightweight crown against surging Ascension MMA export Freddy Assuncao in the Titan 40 main event on Aug. 5 at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Florida. UFC Fight Pass will provide coverage of the event. A two-time K-1 Hero’s grand prix winner, Cavalcante has registered back-to-back wins for the first time since 2007. The 33-year-old Blackzilians rep returned from close to a two-year layoff on June 10, as he captured the Titan lightweight title with a stunning first-round knockout against Pat Healy . Wins over Vitor Ribeiro , Rani Yahya , Caol Uno , Katsunori Kikuno , Bobby Green and Tyson Griffin anchor the Cavalcante resume.

The UFC returns to Texas next month – but into a new territory on the U.S.-Mexico border – and a pair of lightweight standouts are at the top of the bill.
