MMA’s Greats of the States | Montana: Keith Jardine
Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe,
bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of
their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or
state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States
are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly
is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series,
the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of
all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily
need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need
to be associated with it.

By the Numbers: UFC on Fox 21
It’s getting increasingly difficult to deny Demian
Maia .
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt made a strong case for a
welterweight title shot in the UFC on Fox 21 headliner on Saturday
night, submitting Carlos
Condit with a rear-naked choke just 1:52 into the opening round
of their bout at the Rogers Center in Vancouver. It was the first
time that anyone had submitted “The Natural Born Killer” in more
than a decade.
Grappling dominance is nothing new for Maia in the Octagon,
however, and the figures reflect his fine work in recent years.
Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC
on Fox 21 , with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com.
18: UFC wins for Maia, tying him for third most in UFC history with
Donald
Cerrone and Matt Hughes .
Only Michael
Bisping and Georges St.
Pierre , with 19 apiece, have more.
9: Submission victories in UFC competition for Maia, tying him with
Nate
Diaz for No. 2 in promotion history behind only Royce Gracie
(10).
24: Submission attempts for Maia, tying him with Cole Miller
and Joe
Stevenson for fifth most in UFC history.

After perplexing Bec
Rawlings in the first with her speed and movement, “12 Gauge”
electrified the MMA world by landing a wicked jumping switch kick

pounced on her foe with a tsunami of punches until Dan Miragliotta
had to pull her off. The official time of the highlight reel
knockout came just 17 ticks into the second frame.

Aged wisdom and youthful confidence have always been at odds with
each other. It’s a reasonably understood, inversely proportional
relationship; when the body is more adaptable and broadly capable,
thoughtfulness is less necessary to success than it is when the
body starts to deteriorate. You see this dynamic play out -- in
sports and in life -- with such variability that it’s not certain
which side of the spectrum is winning. Sure, experience is
something you don’t know you never had until you finally get it,
but at the same time, experience is something you’ll never get if
you don’t tell your mind to shut up and get out of the body’s way.
No amount of physical ability can substitute intelligence, and yet
you can’t compile any number of sage aphorisms to land a standing
backflip.
In mixed martial arts, this tension manifests in interesting ways.

Beating the Odds: UFC on Fox 21
Jim
Miller was thought by some to be a fading force in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight division. Perhaps
talk of his demise was a little premature.
Miller -- a +120 underdog, according to BetDSI.com -- wound up on
the right side of a split decision in his UFC
on Fox 21 rematch with Joe Lauzon
(-143) on Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.
All three cageside judges struck 29-28 scorecards: David Therien
and Tony Weeks gave Miller the nod, while Dave Hagen
sided with Lauzon.
A former Ring of
Combat and Cage Fury Fighting Championships titleholder, Miller
staggered his counterpart with a stabbing left in the first round
and targeted the body and head with punches, knees and occasional
kicks. Round two followed a similar narrative, until Lauzon drove
into top position after in ill-advised spinning attack from the New
Jersey native and cut loose with some ground-and-pound. “The
Ultimate Fighter 5” semifinalist had Miller on the ground twice in
the third round, as he achieved full mount and sat back on a
last-second armbar.

Olympic Gold Medalist Helen Maroulis ‘Open’ to a Future MMA Career
Helen Maroulis is open to transitioning from wrestling to MMA, but
only after she fulfills the rest of her Olympic dreams.
The gold medalist recently told
TMZ Sports that she is “open” to a career in MMA but, “right
now my focus is on wrestling.”
Maroulis shocked the world last week at 2016 Olympics in Rio de
Janeiro when she edged legendary wrestler Saori Yoshida 4-1 to
capture gold for the U.S. team. Yoshida is the most decorated
freestyle wrestler of all time, having won gold medals in the 2004,
’08 and ’12 Olympics. Maroulis’ triumph was historic in that it was
the first time in history that an American woman captured gold in
wrestling at the Games.
The 24-year-old Maryland native said that she is going to compete
for Team USA in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo but maintained that
switching over and fighting in the MMA cage is a possibility down
the road.

Tyron Woodley: People have said some ‘racist stuff’ since I won the belt
Recently crowned UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley says the insults thrown his way since winning belt are far worse than he could have imagined
It’s hasn’t been all sunshine and roses for UFC champion Tyron Woodley.
During one of his recent segments on his podcast, The Morning Wood Show , Woodley revealed life as the UFC’s newly crowned welterweight champion is nothing like he pictured it.
Woodley (16-3) earned his 170-pound title after dethroning former champion Robbie Lawler in the first round of their UFC 201 title fight in July. Almost immediately following his victory, “The Chosen One” called for a matchup with either former champion Georges St-Pierre or cult icon Nick Diaz. Needless to say, fans weren’t too keen on the idea.
“I can tell you from experience, as a champion, the last three weeks of my life have been completely the opposite of what you’d think it’d be,” said Woodley. “I’ve had so many people say, ‘you p–sy, you’re scared of this person’ and I’m like, I just fought an hour ago. I just got the belt. I’ve had people say ‘you should be stripped of the belt’ and actually it’s a month today that I won the belt.

Rory MacDonald Wants Time to Let Nose Heal, Targets Summer 2017 for Bellator Debut
While Rory
MacDonald ’s signing with Bellator
MMA became official on Friday night, it might be close to
another year before “The Red King” makes his promotional debut.
During a press conference following
Bellator 160 in Anaheim, Calif., on Friday night, the former
UFC welterweight title challenger said that he likely won’t fight
until the summer of 2017 in order to let his nose heal from damage
taken in two previous bouts.
“It’s gonna be in 2017. I’m gonna say summer, but we’ll see what
happens. It could be before that but definitely 2017,” MacDonald
said.
“I want to give my nose 100 percent time to heal. Last time I
didn’t treat it the way I was supposed to,” he added. “I was too
hungry to get back in the gym, to get in there and spar with guys
to fight. That’s just in me to just go all the time. But I really
have to pump brakes on this one because I can’t be taking a year
off between every fight. That’s just not what I’m about. I’m gonna
give it the time it needs to heal back to 100 percent, then
hopefully I can fight once a quarter.

Carlos
Condit , just one fight removed from a narrow split decision
loss to then- Ultimate
Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie
Lawler , was submitted by Demian Maia
less than two minutes into their UFC
on Fox 21 main event on Saturday in Vancouver, British
Columbia. The loss was Condit’s fifth in his last seven fights
dating back to 2012. Afterwards, the former UFC interim
welterweight champion, a fighter who has been near the top of the
division for years, suggested that perhaps the end was near.
“I don’t know if I have any business fighting at this level
anymore,” Condit said during the post-fight press conference, still
reeling from his first submission loss since 2006. “I’ve been at
this for a really long time, and the pressure of kind of being one
of the top guys for almost a decade, it’s been awesome.

featherweights under the One

Ting, 27, has rattled off five wins in six appearances, a May 2015
submission loss to Gafurov the only blemish. The Auckland MMA rep
last competed at One Championship “Clash of Heroes” on Jan. 29,
when he submitted Eric Kelly
with a third-round guillotine choke. Ting has secured eight of his
11 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or
submission.
Lisita will enter the cage on a three-fight losing streak, having
suffered back-to-back-to-back defeats to Gafurov, Kelly and
Timofey
Nastyukhin . The 33-year-old Australian remains the only man to
finish “Lion” Takeshi
Inoue , as he submitted the former Shooto

finishes among his 14 pro wins.
One Championship “Unbreakable Warriors” will also feature a

Quick Demian Maia Rear-Naked Choke Stuns Carlos Condit in UFC on Fox 21 Headliner
"Hi, my name is Demian Maia. I'll be the

Demian
Maia taught a master class on Carlos
Condit .
The 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World
Championships gold medalist tapped Condit with a first-round
rear-naked choke in the UFC
on Fox 21 headliner on Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver,
British Columbia. Condit (30-10, 7-6 UFC) conceded defeat 1:52 into
round one, as he was submitted for the first time in more than a
decade.
Maia (24-6, 18-6 UFC) delivered a takedown inside the first 40
seconds, calmly advanced his position and worked his way to the
Albuquerque, New Mexico, native’s back. From there, he snaked his
arms in place, tightened his squeeze and waited for the tapout.
Condit reluctantly obliged.
The win was Maia’s 18th inside the Octagon, tying him with Matt Hughes
and Donald
Cerrone for third on the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s
all-time list. Only Michael

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - As Light as a Feather
After losing his UFC lightweight title and suffering three straight
losses in the 155-pound shark tank, Anthony
Pettis had his back against the wall. In his featherweight
debut in Vancouver, British Columbia, however, “Showtime” handled
his business, and now, he is ranked in a new weight class after six
years amidst the lightweight elite.
In less than two years, Pettis slid down the Sherdog.com
lightweight rankings, spurring his move to 145 pounds. In his first
featherweight action inside the Octagon, Pettis showed off his
stylish striking and defensive grappling against always-dangerous
Charles
Oliveira , before securing a third-round guillotine choke. The
win not only earned Pettis a new lease on life in a new weight
class, but also sees him debut in the six spot in our featherweight
rankings.
Pettis, however, was not the star of UFC on Fox 21. Though it did
not feature any jumps in weight class, Demian Maia
needed less than two minutes to submit perennially outstanding
welterweight Carlos
Condit in Vancouver, British Columbia.

He didn’t want me to take anything as disrespect, and I didn’t take it as disrespect. He’s a competitor and I said, “If you want to do it, let’s do it. I’m ready to fight you.” But it’s not my decision, the UFC is a business and the way it works, because UFC is a business, they have to choose what’s best for them," St-Pierre said.

Conor McGregor has a decision to make but what option will he take?
It's the same fight for McGregor but it takes place six weeks later at the year-end card on Dec. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Now if McGregor goes with this option, the chances he holds onto his featherweight title are pretty slim. If interim champion Jose Aldo is healthy and ready to defend the belt, the UFC would probably prefer him not sit out for six months or more just waiting for the chance to unify the title with McGregor.
