Matches to Make After UFC 203

Alistair Overeem was not the man to pry the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title out of Stipe Miocic ’s hands. Miocic knocked out the Dutchman with crushing first-round ground-and-pound to retain his championship in the UFC 203 ( online betting ) main event on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, as the Euclid, Ohio, native sent his fellow Buckeyes home with smiles on their faces. Overeem succumbed to punches 4:27 into round one. The successful title defense was not without adversity for Miocic, who was felled by a left hand and forced to defend against a subsequent guillotine choke. The 34-year-old Strong Style Fight Team withstood Overeem’s advances, returned to his feet and imposed his will with relentless pressure. Miocic took down the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix winner after he threw an ill-advised side kick, settled in top position and beat him unconscious with three right hands from inside guard. Miocic has rattled off four straight victories, all of them finishes, since his December 2014 decision loss to Junior dos Santos .

After Rough UFC Debut, CM Punk Says ‘I Will Be Back, Believe It Or Not’

CM Punk's UFC debut went about the way one might have expected it would for a 37-year-old with no previous mixed martial arts experience. Punk was never competitive in his brief encounter with Mickey Gall at UFC 203 on Saturday night. The former WWE superstar was taken down immediately, dominated on the mat and submitted with a rear-naked choke at the 2:14 mark of round one. After nearly two years of training at Roufusport, Punk’s first Octagon foray offered little of note. Still, the Chicago native had no regrets about his decision to sign with the UFC and pursue a dream. “You know in life you go big or you go home,” he said. “I just like to take challenges. It was a hell of a climb. I didn't get to the summit tonight but it doesn't mean I'm going to give up. It doesn't mean I'm going anywhere. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop. I appreciate all the support from everybody.” Gall entered the matchup relatively inexperienced, with just a pair of professional bouts on his resume, but he was clearly more polished than his more celebrated opponent.

Sports -- both participating and watching -- are indeed fun and entertaining, mostly because we all understand that such physical feats are really, really difficult. Somewhere in the heart of man there is a relentless curiosity to know the limits of our species. A core part of all of us wants to see a concrete demarcation of what those limits are even though they rarely have much to do with our own personal limitations, which tend to be pretty unimpressive in the grand scheme of things. It’s why we idolize and admire great people: They show us what can be done while simultaneously making us wonder how they did it. The visual aesthetic of greatness is only part of it; actually seeing the best is obviously great, but we also want to simply know.

Fabricio Werdum on Altercation with Tarverdyan: ‘I Could See He Wanted to Punch My Face’

Fabricio Werdum ’s second victory over Travis Browne in UFC competition became a footnote because of what happened in the aftermath. Before the final verdict for the UFC 203 co-main event was announced, Werdum had a brief altercation with Browne’s coach, Edmond Tarverdyan , that ended with the Brazilian throwing a push kick at the Glendale Fighting Club head. Fortunately, the UFC avoided a full-blown melee, as both corners were ordered to exit the cage before the situation could escalate. According to Werdum, who ultimately won a unanimous decision over Browne, he reacted the way he did simply to keep Tarverdyan at a safe range. “The coach comes in and he says, ‘Shut up your mouth, motherf—-er. I said, ‘What?’ For me he’s [calling my mom a whore]. I just keep the distance,” Werdum said at the post-fight press conference. “I know he’s a boxing coach. I could see in his eyes he wanted to punch my face. I just kept the distance, that’s it. He said a lot of bad things. My mom said never say bad things about nobody, but he started it.

‘GGG’ Forces Fifth-Round Stoppage of Kell Brook

Reigning middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin proved once again that he is arguably the most lethal fighter in the world of boxing. He survived a few early scares in the O2 Arena in London to eventually stop local fighter Kell Brook in the fifth retain his WBC and IBF 160-pound belts, though it wasn’t a typical “GGG” big drama show. Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) badly rocked Brook with a powerful left hook to the head in the opening frame but when he couldn’t put the Brit away, the tides of the fight were nearly turned in the second. Brook stunned the Kazakhstani powerhouse with an assortment of punches to the head, namely the right uppercut on the inside. But Brook (36-1, 25 KOs) wasn’t able to sustain the attack long enough to keep the relentless Golovkin at bay for good. Golovkin stuck Brook with stiff jabs and stinging left hooks to the head and body and while Brook, who possess the IBF welterweight title, tried his best to stay afloat, he couldn’t deal with the visiting fighter’s power. Golovkin turned up the heat in the fifth after it was evident that Brook was bothered by swelling around his right eye.

The Walkmen: UFC 203 ‘Miocic vs. Overeem’

UFC 203 “Miocic vs. Overeem” was loaded with terrific action, a few slick submissions and some highlight-reel knockouts on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. As always, the violence inside the Octagon was accompanied by the musical tastes of the fighters who authored it. Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic opted to go with Machine Gun Kelly’s “Till I Die” ahead of his title defense against Alistair Overeem in the main event, and it served him well. Considering how he overcame an early knockdown from the Dutch kickboxer and then knocked him cold with ground-and-pound, Miocic has designs on keeping the UFC gold for a long time, perhaps until he dies. Yasuharu Takanashi’s “Pride Fighting Championships Official Theme” ushered Overeem to the cage. Meanwhile, Phil Brooks , aka “CM Punk,” made his long-awaited and heavily hyped debut and ignited the capacity crowd with Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality” -- his trademark walkout song from his days as a World Wrestling Entertainment superstar. Brooks looked like a fish out of water in a submission loss to Mickey Gall , who stole the show with “Hey Mickey” from 1980s one-hit wonder Toni Basil.

UFC 203 Prelims: Bethe Correia Spoils Jessica Eye Homecoming, Pockets Split Decision

Bethe Correia brought out the boo birds. Correia spoiled the homecoming of Ohio native Jessica Eye , as she eked out a split decision over the Last Stand Fight Team standout in the featured UFC 203 “Miocic vs. Overeem” prelim on Saturday ( online betting ) at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. All three cageside judges scored it 29-28: Derek Cleary and Eric Colon for Correia, Sal D’Amato for Eye. Neither fighter seemed capable of seizing control. They spent a majority of the three-round encounter trading right hands and intermittent kicks to the legs and body. Eye (11-6, 1-5 UFC) was the busier of the two for much of the first 10 minutes, tagging and bloodying the Brazilian with a series of overhand rights and crisp jabs. Correia (10-2, 4-2 UFC) saved her best for last, however, as she staggered Eye with a right hand in the third round and spent the closing seconds corralling her against the cage. UFC 203 live blog: Miocic vs. Overeem

Round 1: The referee for this one is Marc Goddard. The crowd gave Miocic a hero's welcome as he came out, and just as ceremonially, they booed the hell out of Overeem. He is squarely in enemy territory. Let's see if the roof will come off this place or if it'll be left eerily silent. They touched gloves during the instructions, and shook hands. Much respect between the two, as a chant of "STIPE" breaks across the Q. They touch gloves again, and Reem takes the center. Now Miocic. Both cautious as the chants rain down. Each make fakes a kick, and now Stipe moves forward throwing shots. But right now Overeem is on his bike, rolling around. Big kick from Overeem. And now he clocks Miocic with a huge shot that drops him! Goes for a choke...can't get it. Stipe back up and chasing him around the cage. Wow! Crowd going ballistic. They reset, as some blood trickles out of Miocic's nose. Miicoic tracks down Overeem and lands a couple on the fence, and now he does it again on the other side, and Reem rolls off. He is going after Overeem, trying to corner him. Now he has him and he's wailing away, as Overeem again runs off.
