Matches to Make After UFC 203

Alistair Overeem was not the man to pry the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title out of Stipe Miocic ’s hands. Miocic knocked out the Dutchman with crushing first-round ground-and-pound to retain his championship in the UFC 203 ( online betting ) main event on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, as the Euclid, Ohio, native sent his fellow Buckeyes home with smiles on their faces. Overeem succumbed to punches 4:27 into round one. The successful title defense was not without adversity for Miocic, who was felled by a left hand and forced to defend against a subsequent guillotine choke. The 34-year-old Strong Style Fight Team withstood Overeem’s advances, returned to his feet and imposed his will with relentless pressure. Miocic took down the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix winner after he threw an ill-advised side kick, settled in top position and beat him unconscious with three right hands from inside guard. Miocic has rattled off four straight victories, all of them finishes, since his December 2014 decision loss to Junior dos Santos .

Opinion: A Good Heavyweight is Hard to Find

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * When we break down the purpose of organized competition into its most basic parts, past the platitudes of fun and entertainment, we get a glimpse into the human psyche. Sports -- both participating and watching -- are indeed fun and entertaining, mostly because we all understand that such physical feats are really, really difficult. Somewhere in the heart of man there is a relentless curiosity to know the limits of our species. A core part of all of us wants to see a concrete demarcation of what those limits are even though they rarely have much to do with our own personal limitations, which tend to be pretty unimpressive in the grand scheme of things. It’s why we idolize and admire great people: They show us what can be done while simultaneously making us wonder how they did it. The visual aesthetic of greatness is only part of it; actually seeing the best is obviously great, but we also want to simply know.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Buckwild in the Buckeye State

In front of a raucous, hometown crowd at UFC 203 in Cleveland, Stipe Miocic defended the UFC heavyweight title, pounding out Alistair Overeem in the first round. However, his performance does not make the division’s title picture any less muddled. While Cain Velasquez ’s July blowout of Travis Browne made the former divisional ruler look prime for another title fight, the man Miocic dethroned, Fabricio Werdum , rolled into Cleveland and took a second win over late replacement Browne before calling out Miocic in hopes of securing a rematch. Whatever Miocic’s next title defense might look like now entirely rests in the hands of the UFC. Meanwhile, below the very top of the division, old veterans are still hacking it out. Josh Barnett and Andrei Arlovski -- two former UFC heavyweight champs who in 2000 made their Octagon debut on the same card, UFC 28 , back in the Semaphore Entertainment Group era of the company -- squared off in Hamburg, Germany, on Sept. 3. “The Warmaster” pushed past Arlovski in the third round, taking his back, choking him out and reaffirming his relevance, even at 38 years old, in MMA’s heavyweight ranks.

Luke Rockhold-Ronaldo Souza Rematch to Headline UFC Fight Night Event on Nov. 26

The Bottom Line: Cut CM Punk Now

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * With Phil Brooks ’ Octagon debut now complete, the question turns to what comes next for the former pro wrestling star. The biggest factor influencing the future of “CM Punk” is whether Ultimate Fighting Championship elects to give him another fight. UFC President Dana White has already suggested in an interview with The Fight Network’s John Pollock that Punk might be better off fighting elsewhere. However, the decision will surely be debated among the UFC’s new ownership group, particularly as pay-per-view revenues start to come in for a UFC 203 card that was largely promoted around Punk. The decision ought to be an easy one: The UFC should cut Punk after his one and only bout in the promotion. There are many delighting over Punk’s fate in his UFC debut. Punk has made enemies in wrestling circles for his outspoken personality and in MMA circles for his hubris in taking a UFC fight with no experience.

Mickey Gall felt a "strong obligation" to "make an example" of CM Punk |

“I 100 percent felt a strong obligation to make an example out of him. I felt indebted to my sport, to the veterans of my sport — everyone in my sport — to go in there and dominate every second of this fight.” “I figured he’d be tough, man,” Gall said. “Those wrestlers, they’re tough guys. They’re slamming themselves around and stuff. It was pretty much what I expected. I knew once he got in there with me, I was gonna be able to just dominate him.” “I’ve just been really committed and I’ve been really smart about it. I saw the videos of him and I would have liked to have knocked him out. I wanted a knockout. That was the plan.”

UFC 203 medical suspensions include Stipe Miocic, Alistair Overeem, and CM Punk |

From a back and forth heavyweight title fight that ended up with a knockout delivered by the champion Stipe Miocic to a kick thrown by former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum on his opponent’s coach after the fight was over. UFC 203 definitely provided entertainment for the fans, but it also came at a price for 12 of the 20 fighters that stepped into the Octagon.

Conor McGregor respects CM Punk for fighting but 'he got his ass whooped'

During the "Backlash" event, Dolph Ziggler and "The Miz" opened their match with a carbon copy homage to the Punk vs. Gall fight with a big slam to start things before a near rear-naked choke finish a few seconds later. Whether or not it was a direct slam aimed at Punk is unknown, but Ziggler was one of the wrestlers Ric Flair mentioned as a person who would give McGregor everything he could handle if the two of them ever faced off in the Octagon.

UFC Champ Stipe Miocic: It Was a Lot Easier Fighting Fighting in Brazil Than Cleveland

In terms of fan support for hometown fighters, Cleveland offered one of the most electric atmospheres in recent memory at UFC 203 . That scene reached a crescendo for Stipe Miocic ’s walkout and subsequent knockout victory over Alistair Overeem in the evening’s main event at Quicken Loans Arena. While the Independence, Ohio, native appreciated the love, he admittedly felt far less pressure when he initially claimed the heavyweight crown with a first-round stoppage of Fabricio Werdum in front of more than 40,000 hostile Brazilian fans at UFC 198 last May. “I would totally rather fight in Brazil. It was a lot easier for me, honestly,” Miocic said at the post-fight press conference. “Just the last four months have been crazy in my life. He [Overeem] thought I was partying and all that, but fortunately I was training really hard for this fight. I got married, did all that. I’m going to take some time for myself, go on a honeymoon with my wife, treat her.” It doesn’t appear that Miocic will return to defend the title before the conclusion of 2016.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Nebraska: Jake Ellenberger

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** Jake Ellenberger will not go down as the greatest welterweight of his generation, but the 31-year-old Omaha, Nebraska, native has enjoyed a long and successful career. His wrestling background has helped him become a perennial contender at 170 pounds, and given his unique set of skills, most notably his thunderous knockout power, it is not out of the question that he might someday become a world champion. A former United States Marine, Ellenberger kicked off his MMA career in 2005 after witnessing a friend compete in the Victory Fighting Championship organization.

Duke Roufus on CM Punk: I Think He’s Going to Fight Again

For someone making his simultaneous mixed martial arts and Ultimate Fighting Championship debut, nobody has ever received more media hype and attention than Phil Brooks did last Saturday. Known mostly by his pro wrestling stage name CM Punk, the Chicago native pulled in a reported half million dollars for lasting just two minutes and 14 seconds against Mickey Gall at UFC 203 ( offshore sportsbooks ) before submitting to a textbook rear-naked choke. While Punk has been the subject of endless criticism and in some cases just flat-out hatred for being such a highly-promoted and paid newbie to the sport, head coach and trainer Duke Roufus said he understands everything that went into his match with Gall. Roufus told the Sherdog Radio Network that people just looked at Punk the character and not the hard-working, diligent student he is. A quick cash grab this wasn’t, according to the former K-1 veteran, but in reality, the former WWE star has benefitted everybody. “Everyone has their own opinion,” Roufus said. “It’s like when a fight is a close decision, it’s an opinion and I respect it.

Leonard was synonymous with the word "event" in the 1980s, forming rivalries with Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler — all of whom he defeated. Opinion: CM Punk’s Salary Magnifies Fighter Pay Issue

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Well, that went about how we all expected it to go. Phil Brooks , aka “CM Punk,” finally made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut almost two years after the start of his formal mixed martial arts training. The end result at UFC 203 on Saturday in Cleveland was a one-sided demolition at the hands of Mickey Gall . Most of the MMA community had a laugh at the former pro wrestler’s expense. Then we learned how much he was paid for spending just over two minutes getting beaten down: $500,000. Not so funny now, is it? There are a few ways that you can look at this, and none of them are favorable to the fighters in the UFC. On one hand, Punk’s debut drew a ton of attention and likely sold a significant amount of pay-per-views. If that’s taken into consideration, a $500,000 payday sounds appropriate. However, if we assume that UFC 203 sold somewhere around 800,000 PPVs and the UFC can pay a fighter with zero MMA experience half a million dollars, doesn’t that mean the rest of the fighters on the card should be raking in more money? Obviously, nobody paid to see Gall fight.
