Liam Smith Ready to Shock the World, Topple ‘Canelo’ on Saturday

It’s a moment every young kid with championship aspirations dreams of. Taking on the biggest opponent of your life in front of thousands of screaming fans and digging deep to score a dramatic come-from-behind victory. In the end, your hand is raised and then your team hoists you on their shoulders while you hold the championship belt over your head. While the fight hasn’t happened yet, Liam Smith is well prepared to deal with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) on Saturday. Though the Liverpool native is unbeaten thus far as a pro, he has never taken on anybody with the skillset of “Canelo” and he’s never fought on a stage as big as the one he’ll find himself in when he climbs through the ropes inside Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Dallas. The bout airs live on HBO Boxing Pay-per-View at 9 p.m. ET. To say he’s giddy with anticipation and overflowing with confidence would be an understatement. “This is a fight that I’ve wanted for a long time and it’s one that I get to prove myself against the best in the world,” Smith told Sherdog.com in a recent interview.

Ex-champs Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum likely to meet at UFC 207

In this case, Werdum would get a likely title-eliminator after losing the title to Miocic at UFC 198, which was his first attempted title defense after capturing the belt from Velasquez at UFC 188.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Buckwild in the Buckeye State

In front of a raucous, hometown crowd at UFC 203 in Cleveland, Stipe Miocic defended the UFC heavyweight title, pounding out Alistair Overeem in the first round. However, his performance does not make the division’s title picture any less muddled. While Cain Velasquez ’s July blowout of Travis Browne made the former divisional ruler look prime for another title fight, the man Miocic dethroned, Fabricio Werdum , rolled into Cleveland and took a second win over late replacement Browne before calling out Miocic in hopes of securing a rematch. Whatever Miocic’s next title defense might look like now entirely rests in the hands of the UFC. Meanwhile, below the very top of the division, old veterans are still hacking it out. Josh Barnett and Andrei Arlovski -- two former UFC heavyweight champs who in 2000 made their Octagon debut on the same card, UFC 28 , back in the Semaphore Entertainment Group era of the company -- squared off in Hamburg, Germany, on Sept. 3. “The Warmaster” pushed past Arlovski in the third round, taking his back, choking him out and reaffirming his relevance, even at 38 years old, in MMA’s heavyweight ranks.

Opinion: CM Punk’s Salary Magnifies Fighter Pay Issue

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Well, that went about how we all expected it to go. Phil Brooks , aka “CM Punk,” finally made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut almost two years after the start of his formal mixed martial arts training. The end result at UFC 203 on Saturday in Cleveland was a one-sided demolition at the hands of Mickey Gall . Most of the MMA community had a laugh at the former pro wrestler’s expense. Then we learned how much he was paid for spending just over two minutes getting beaten down: $500,000. Not so funny now, is it? There are a few ways that you can look at this, and none of them are favorable to the fighters in the UFC. On one hand, Punk’s debut drew a ton of attention and likely sold a significant amount of pay-per-views. If that’s taken into consideration, a $500,000 payday sounds appropriate. However, if we assume that UFC 203 sold somewhere around 800,000 PPVs and the UFC can pay a fighter with zero MMA experience half a million dollars, doesn’t that mean the rest of the fighters on the card should be raking in more money? Obviously, nobody paid to see Gall fight.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Nebraska: Jake Ellenberger

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** Jake Ellenberger will not go down as the greatest welterweight of his generation, but the 31-year-old Omaha, Nebraska, native has enjoyed a long and successful career. His wrestling background has helped him become a perennial contender at 170 pounds, and given his unique set of skills, most notably his thunderous knockout power, it is not out of the question that he might someday become a world champion. A former United States Marine, Ellenberger kicked off his MMA career in 2005 after witnessing a friend compete in the Victory Fighting Championship organization.

Duke Roufus on CM Punk: I Think He’s Going to Fight Again

For someone making his simultaneous mixed martial arts and Ultimate Fighting Championship debut, nobody has ever received more media hype and attention than Phil Brooks did last Saturday. Known mostly by his pro wrestling stage name CM Punk, the Chicago native pulled in a reported half million dollars for lasting just two minutes and 14 seconds against Mickey Gall at UFC 203 ( offshore sportsbooks ) before submitting to a textbook rear-naked choke. While Punk has been the subject of endless criticism and in some cases just flat-out hatred for being such a highly-promoted and paid newbie to the sport, head coach and trainer Duke Roufus said he understands everything that went into his match with Gall. Roufus told the Sherdog Radio Network that people just looked at Punk the character and not the hard-working, diligent student he is. A quick cash grab this wasn’t, according to the former K-1 veteran, but in reality, the former WWE star has benefitted everybody. “Everyone has their own opinion,” Roufus said. “It’s like when a fight is a close decision, it’s an opinion and I respect it.

Gray Maynard, Ryan Hall to Clash at ‘The Ultimate Fighter 24’ Finale on Dec. 3

Former lightweight No. 1 contender Gray Maynard will remain at featherweight and face fellow “Ultimate Fighter” alum Ryan Hall at the "TUF 24" finale on Dec. 3. The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported the bout. The “TUF 24” finale takes place at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and will see reigning flyweight king Demetrious Johnson put his title on the line against the winner of the reality show. Top 125-pound contenders and “TUF” coaches Joseph Benavidez and Henry Cejudo will also square off at the event. Maynard halted a four-fight skid in his 145-pound debut, taking a three-round verdict over Fernando Bruno at the “TUF 23” finale on July 8. Prior to that, “The Bully” had tasted victory just once since 2011: a split-decision triumph against Clay Guida at UFC on FX 4. Hall, meanwhile, has not competed since winning “TUF 22” by outpointing Artem Lobov this past December. The decorated grappler competed on the show at lightweight but will move to 145 pounds to face Maynard. He owns a 5-1 career mark as a professional.

‘TUF 24’ Recap: Episode 3

After three finishes to start the season, Team Cejudo has jumped to a quick 2-1 lead over Team Benavidez. After the obligatory recap from last week’s episode and the snazzy intro, Episode 3 is underway and it starts with the fight announcement that concluded Episode 2. It doesn’t take long, like three seconds, before Damacio Page begins talking trash to Henry Cejudo about how Page’s last name is actually pronounced. The two were supposed to fight in the Legacy Fighting Championship a few years ago but it never materialized because Cejudo for various reasons. Page explains that they were supposed to fight that promotion’s flyweight title but Cejudo never showed up, which cost “The Angel of Death” a payday and opportunity at a championship. Naturally, there’s a little bit of animosity from page against Cejudo. From there, Dana White explains Page’s rise through the World Extreme Cagefighting and then the Ultimate Fighting Championship before showing all sorts of wicked Damacio knockouts and says that Page has a legitimate chance to get a rematch with Demetrious Johnson.

Opinion: Kneeing Groins and Making Coins

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * These past few weeks have been a reminder of what heavyweight mixed martial arts is really like. In Hamburg, Germany, 38-year-old Josh Barnett choked out 37-year-old Andrei Arlovski in the third round of their battle of former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champs of decades past. A week later in Cleveland, Stipe Miocic managed to get rocked several times and nearly choked out, yet still somehow brutally dispatched Alistair Overeem in his first UFC heavyweight title defense in under five minutes. Fabricio Werdum dominated injury replacement Travis Browne for a second time, then front kicked his coach Edmond Tarverdyan after the fight. Miocic and Browne are the babies of this group; they're both 34 years old. Barnett seemed like an afterthought when Ben Rothwell tapped and upset him and now with one win, a guy who made his Octagon debut almost 16 years ago on the first government regulated UFC show, UFC 28, is right back in contendership.

Daniel Cormier on Jones' Interim Title: Take That Freakin' Belt off of Him | BJPenn.com

“I hope to God Dana misspoke, because that [fight with Rumble] makes absolutely no sense. They aren’t fighting for some interim title if they fight. They can fight in the main event because it’s a big fight and it’s a fun fight. If they fight, they fight to determine the number one contender it’s not some interim championship fight. That makes no sense at all… You’d have an interim champion defending the interim championship while the actual champion is actually still there. That makes no sense whatsoever.”

I’m going into my second fight in Bellator, but I have people showing up at the gym with my pictures wanting me to sign them,” Yankova told Sherdog.com through a translator. “There are people recognizing me at the airport, just in random places. “[Recently] we went to do medicals and all the girls at the doctor’s office wanted to take pictures. Fertitta Family Donates $10 Million to UNLV Football Program for Training Facility

Former UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta has been quiet since selling his stake in the company earlier this year, but his family’s pockets remain deep. That was evident on Tuesday, as the Fertitta family donated $10 million dollars to the UNLV football program, the school announced in a statement . The money will go toward building a 73,000 square foot, two-level training complex that will cost approximately $24-26 million total. According to a release, it is the largest single donation in the history of UNLV athletics; the previous largest gift was a $7.2 million donation made by the Mendenhall family toward the construction of the men’s basketball training facility in 2012. The training center will be known as the Fertitta Football Complex and “will become the day-to-day home of the program and include an academic center, locker rooms, offices, meeting rooms, strength and conditioning center, media room, training table and nutrition bar, athletic training center and player lounge.” "We believe in the future of Rebel Football under Tony Sanchez's leadership and are proud to join others in the community in helping make this vital building block for the program become a reality,” the Fertittas said in a statement issued through UNLV.

Opinion: A Good Heavyweight is Hard to Find

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * When we break down the purpose of organized competition into its most basic parts, past the platitudes of fun and entertainment, we get a glimpse into the human psyche. Sports -- both participating and watching -- are indeed fun and entertaining, mostly because we all understand that such physical feats are really, really difficult. Somewhere in the heart of man there is a relentless curiosity to know the limits of our species. A core part of all of us wants to see a concrete demarcation of what those limits are even though they rarely have much to do with our own personal limitations, which tend to be pretty unimpressive in the grand scheme of things. It’s why we idolize and admire great people: They show us what can be done while simultaneously making us wonder how they did it. The visual aesthetic of greatness is only part of it; actually seeing the best is obviously great, but we also want to simply know.
