Chris Horodecki-Derek Gauthier to Headline TKO Major League MMA Return Nov. 4

TKO Major League MMA, the Canadian mixed martial arts promotion that once served as a staging ground for fighters like two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Georges St. Pierre , will rise from the ashes of an eight-year absence in November. Former International Fight League cornerstone Chris Horodecki and Derek Gauthier are expected to lock horns in the TKO 36 “Resurrection” headliner on Nov. 4 at Tohu in Montreal. TKO has not promoted an event since October 2008. Horodecki has not fought since June 2015, when he submitted to a neck crank from four-time NCAA All-American Lance Palmer under the World Series of Fighting banner. The 28-year-old Shawn Tompkins protégé started his career 12-0 but has gone a disappointing 9-6-1, with one no-contest, across his last 17 appearances. Victories over Ryan Schultz , Bart Palaszewski , Ed West and Daniel Downes highlight the Horodecki resume. Gauthier, 30, will enter the cage on a three-fight losing streak. The Tristar Gym export last competed at a Superior Challenge event in 2014, when he wound up on the wrong side of a unanimous decision against Jonathan Svensson in Sodertalje, Sweden.

Jack Marshman to Defend Middleweight Crown in Cage Warriors 79 Main Event on Oct. 15

Jack Marshman will put his Cage Warriors Fighting Championship middleweight title on the line when he meets Andreas Michailidis in the Cage Warriors 79 main event on Oct. 15 at the Newport Centre in Newport, Wales. Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans Martin Svensson and Che Mills will also appear on the card in separate bouts. Marshman has rattled off six consecutive victories. The 26-year-old Welshman last competed at Cage Warriors 77 in July, when he stopped Christopher Jacquelin with punches 4:58 into the first round and retained his 185-pound championship in London. Marshman has secured 17 of his 20 professional wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission. A Bellator MMA and King of the Cage alum, Michailidis has recorded back-to-back wins since his TKO defeat to Jason Butcher at Bellator 128 a little more than two years ago. The 28-year-old Greek middleweight last appeared under the Abu Dhabi Warriors Fighting Championship banner on May 24, when he took a three-round unanimous decision from Ion Pascu in the United Arab Emirates. UFC Fight Night Bonuses: Johnson, Dunham, Glenn, Skelly Pocket $50K Awards

Michael Johnson wants to get paid, and he fought like it against Dustin Poirier . “The Menace” garnered a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his work in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night Hidalgo main event, as he knocked out Poirier with a counter right hook and follow-up punches 1:35 into the opening stanza of their lightweight encounter. The sudden finish brought a resounding end to Poirier’s four-fight winning streak at 155 pounds. Elsewhere, Evan Dunham and Rick Glenn pocketed $50,000 apiece for “Fight of the Night” in their featured lightweight scrap. Dunham nearly put Glenn away with a rear-naked choke in round one and generally got the better of his adversary with a pressure-based offensive approach. Glenn stayed in the fight for all three rounds, however, and the two combatants engaged in a wild slugfest in the contest’s waning moments. Finally, Chas Skelly was an easy choice to receive the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check. The 31-year-old Texan launched himself at opponent Maximo Blanco with a flying kick to the chest in the opening moments of their bout.

UFC Fight Night 94 play-by-play and live results (7 p.m. ET)

Round 1 – Herb Dean is going to look in on this middleweight co-main event that features a lot of bad blood. Hall stares Brunson down before they get to work. And he’s right after him. They clinch up six seconds in and Hall pushes Brunson to the cage for a second before a quick reversal by Brunson. Brunson gets double underhooks, and it takes the South Texas fans all of 45 seconds into the fight to start booing. After a minute, Hall pushes out and gets back to the center of the cage. He fires a left jab, then a nice front kick pushes Brunson back. And then, just like that, Brunson drills him. A left hand sends Hall to the canvas. Brunson is on him in a hurry and lands several hammer fists. Dean looks in, and he’s going to shut it down. Brunson hops off and starts to celebrate – and Hall calmly gets up and looks at Dean adn asks what the problem was. Hall believes he was defending himself enough – and it looks on the replay like he was. I’m not sure Hall had anywhere else to go, and Brunson was going to keep landing. But it definitely looks like a potentially early stoppage.

By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 94

Dustin Poirier had lightweight title aspirations. Michael Johnson had other ideas. Johnson ended Poirier’s run of success at 155 pounds in emphatic fashion, knocking out the Louisiana native 1:35 into the opening round of their main event encounter at UFC Fight Night ( online betting ) in Hidalgo, Texas, on Saturday night. “The Menace” flattened Poirier with a counter right hook, and “The Diamond” couldn’t recover before Johnson sealed his triumph with a couple powerful follow-up punches. Now it’s Johnson who has some intriguing options in arguably the sport’s most difficult division. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night “Poirier vs. Johnson,” with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com. 9: Knockdowns in UFC competition for Johnson, the most among active lightweights and No. 2 all-time in the division behind Melvin Guillard (13). 994: Days since Johnson’s last knockout triumph in the Octagon, a second-round KO of Gleison Tibau at UFC 168. The Blackzilian representative’s previous four bouts had gone the distance.

Boxing: ‘Canelo’ Knocks Out Smith in 9, Calls out ‘GGG’

There’s no disputing that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is the current champion in boxing in terms of star power and drawing fans to his fight. The Mexican superstar electrified a reported 51,240 fans inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas by scoring a highlight reel knockout of Liam Smith in the main event on HBO Pay-Per-View, setting up a potential mega fight next year. Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) systematically broke Smith down round after round and though “Beefy” had some great success in the fifth and sixth rounds, “Canelo” remained patient until his power came through. When Smith backed Alvarez into the ropes in the seventh, the Guadalajara native uncorked a vicious left hook to the body, followed by an overhand right to the head. The combo dropped Smith, which was for the first time in his professional career, and from there, the end was near. The previously-unbeaten Smith (23-1-1, 13 KOs) was knocked off his feet again in the eighth from a left hook to the liver, but “Canelo” closed the battle out in the ninth with an even better left hook – a Mexican staple – to the body.

Opinion: Money Fights and the Forgotten Art of Knowing One’s Role

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Back when I still started my day stuck on a freeway for an hour every morning, I was regularly reminded of an adage that was more enraging than illuminating. Though it supposedly has its roots in some sort of zen enlightenment, I tend to think that it actually sprouted from some snarky, contrarian dude in the passenger seat. The adage goes something along these lines: “You aren’t in traffic; you are traffic.” I’m not sure what the creator of that was really going for. I suppose he or she was trying to alter the maddening experience of being forced into what is essentially a game of politically correct bumper cars where you want to smash into the person in front of you but can’t. However, instead of thinking “whoa” and feeling my impatience dissolve into the vibrations of the universe, all it did was magnify the fact that there were no other options but to tackle traffic, day in and day out.

Twitter reacts to Michael Johnson's brutal knockout of Dustin Poirier at UFC Fight night 94

Johnson (17-10 MMA, 9-6 UFC) needed a victory to avoid the first three-fight losing skid of his career. That’s what he accomplished when he stopped Poirier’s (20-5 MMA, 12-4 UFC) run of success in the 155-pound division with a highlight-reel first-round knockout victory that puts him back on the map as a contender in the weight class.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Dunham Ducks Back Into the Elite

The University of Oregon football team may have lost its game to Nebraska 35-32 on Sept. 17, but that same night, at least one Oregon Duck showed out. Evan Dunham began his professional MMA career in April 2007. Four months later, Sherdog.com debuted these divisional rankings. For the majority of that nine-year period, Dunham has bounced in and out of this lightweight top 10. With his UFC Fight Night 94 win over Rick Glenn paired with previously 10th-ranked Dustin Poirier ’s loss to Michael Johnson , Dunham slides back into a comfy position in our top 10 once again. However, Dunham’s newest stint as a top-10 talent may be short-lived, just as his others were. The Oregonian is a threat to anyone at 155 pounds, and his inability to stay put in these rankings is not a slight on the fighter himself but rather an indicator of the depth, talent and constant upheaval at 155 pounds. As always, the lightweight division has a series of major bouts on deck, both inside and outside the UFC. Over the course of the next two months, fights such as Michael Chandler - Benson Henderson , Beneil Dariush - Rashid Magomedov and Paul Felder - Francisco Trinaldo could quickly give the bottom half of the top 10 a complete facelift.

Video Essay Highlights The Extraordinary Vision Of 12 Essential Female Cinematographers

The Hollywood gender divide isn’t exclusive to acting or directing; there is a serious gap in the world of cinematography, notwithstanding some of the boundless, triumphant work that has been created by women in the past decade (and then some). For every Roger Deakins or Emmanuel Lubezki there’s a Reed Morano  or a  Maryse Alberti , women who have shot some of the most notoriously beautiful and breathtaking films, yet you, and even this author alike, perhaps didn’t know about all of them. One can hope that within the next few years and another cycle of movies that these cinematographers will get even more accolades and become household names.

Ageless Cheick Kongo Earns Majority Decision Over Tony Johnson in Bellator 161 Headliner

Cheick Kongo did just enough. The 41-year-old Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran utilized an effective clinch, timely takedowns and attritive ground-and-pound to capture a majority decision over former King of the Cage champion Tony Johnson in the Bellator 161 headliner on Friday at the HEB Center in Cedar Park, Texas. Judges Jon Schorle and Anthony Townsend ruled 29-28 in Kongo’s favor, while Sal D’Amato scored it a 28-28 draw. Bookend rounds were critical for Kongo (25-10-2), who continues to angle for a shot at the vacant Bellator MMA heavyweight championship. He grounded and mounted Johnson in the first round and then executed a pair of takedowns in the third. His efforts helped erase a one-sided middle frame that Johnson (10-3) dominated. There, the American Kickboxing Academy representative took down Kongo inside the first 20 seconds and maintained an advantageous position for the duration of the round, climbing to full mount in the closing minute. However, his inability to finish proved costly. Kongo has rattled off three straight wins.

You can’t tell me, and I said this before, that 75 percent of the guys wouldn’t die to be professional wrestlers that are fighting, and vice versa. We have a lot respect for each other, a lot of us train in martial arts and a lot of them walk around and act like they’re us. So the cross-promotion – Dana White is Vince McMahon in training. I’ve said that 20 years ago. I think it’s business, I think it’s smart business. Whether it’s (Ronda Rousey) at Wrestlemania, whether Conor is working this thing. I can tell you one thing, I was around when Brock responded to Conor (laughs) and nothing that Brock does is a work.”

M.J. Wants His Money Fight — Calls For Rematch Against Nate Diaz

“It didn’t really piss me off, it just rubbed me the wrong way because I felt like a stepping stone. I was like ‘Shit, he just beat me and now he’s fighting for this amount of money and getting all this fame.’ But, Nate’s been around for awhile, he’s a veteran of the sport and he deserves everything he is getting right now. My hat is off to him. It’s good to see these guys succeed the way they are. Now, with that being said, I want my rematch, I want my money and I want these big-money fights and I am here to show the world that I am not to be joked around with in this division.”

Zingano Releases MUST READ Statement On Why She Started Fighting

“I’m going to be introspective for a moment. I started fighting to have something to do that could help me get in shape after having a baby, as well as a physical outlet outside of my home. Along with being a new mom, I was a full time student, studying to be an American Sign Language interpreter. These were grueling hours, and although a baby is a lot of physical work, I needed to move my body In a way that could physically and therapeutically exhaust me. Taking those moments to be active contributed to being a more present and healthy mom to my child. And mentally, I’m like an animal on that level, I need to balance activity, being up and stimulated or I can get depressed. I fell in love with BJJ. It challenged my mind and body equally and quickly became a silent form of self expression. My joy, my pain, my boredom, my excitement, my issues and frustrations, all things inside could come out in these ever so humbling motions. Some days I was the hammer, some days I was the nail…That in itself kept me challenged. Eventually MMA became an option. I begged to do it, I wanted to know how I would do, knowing what I know, going against someone who thinks and believes they are stronger.
