Preview: UFC Fight Night ‘Volkov vs. Struve’ - Volkov vs. Struve

Forgive the Ultimate Fighting Championship if it has its head in the clouds. Two of the promotion’s tallest fighters will lock horns in the UFC Fight Night 115 headliner, as former Bellator MMA and M-1 Global champion Alexander Volkov meets Stefan Struve on Saturday at Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The rest of four-fight main card features a middleweight clash pitting Siyar Bahadurzada against Rob Wilkinson , a women’s bantamweight affair pairing Marion Reneau with Talita de Oliveira Bernardo and a welterweight clash matching Leon Edwards with Bryan Barberena . Let us take a closer look at each UFC Fight Night “Volkov vs. Struve” matchup, with analysis and picks: Heavyweights Stefan Struve (28-8) vs. Alexander Volkov (28-6) THE MATCHUP: The 6-foot-7 Volkov is used to being the taller man in the cage. Therefore, the aptly named “Skyscraper” will be an interesting challenge for him. Struve stands at a full seven feet tall, and his arms are three inches longer than the Russian’s. Stylistically, however, Volkov is the superior tall man.

UFC Fight Night 115 ‘Volkov vs. Struve’ Play-by-Play, Results & Round-by-Round Scoring

Darren Till vs. Bojan Velickovic Round 1 The welterweights exchange leg kicks in the opening minute, with the taller Till pressing forward, moving Velickovic around the outside. Velickovic starts to up his volume on the low kicks but has to slow down again when Till catches hold of a leg. As Velickovic's back hits the fence, Till steps inside and levels the Serbian with a standing elbow. Velickovic recovers quickly under fire, somehow avoiding a stoppage as Till pours on the punches. Velickovic works back to his feet with two minutes on the clock, leaking blood from the right side of his head. Velickovic calls for the crowd to cheer, then gives Till a mid-fight hug as both men smile. Till hits the side of Velickovic's head with a looping left; Velickovic wobbles for a moment, then swings back with a right hand that grazes Till's face. The rest of the round passes without much incident, with both men raising their hands for cheers from the crowd before the horn sounds. Sherdog Scores Jordan Breen scores the round 10-8 Till Brian Knapp scores the round 10-8 Till Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Till Round 2 Till sticks a jab in the face of Velickovic within seconds of the horn, then continues to keep the shorter man on the outside with rangy strikes.

UFC-Rotterdam results: Leon Edwards survives knockdown, works to decision over Bryan Barberena

The two men started out in southpaw position, with Edwards holding the center as Barberena shifted side to side. Edwards was the quicker man in the early exchanges, and his snapping low kicks did some early damage. Barberena was largely patient to open, and Edwards certainly enjoyed the opportunity to strike on the feet. At the halfway mark of the first, a missed Barberena kick led to an Edwards takedown, and he moved quickly around to the back. Barberena seemed comfortable in the position, punching even as Edwards’ arm wrapped around the chin, but the opening round was clearly in the Brit’s favor.

UFC Fight Night 115 Bonuses: Volkov, Struve, Taisumov, Magomedsharipov Earn $50K

The tallest fight of the night was also UFC Fight Night 115’s best. Alexander Volkov and Stefan Struve earned “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their heavyweight battle in the UFC Fight Night 115 headliner in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Saturday. After suffering a gash under his eye from a Struve knee late in round one, Volkov picked up the pace and ultimately put his foe away with a volley of punches near the cage at the 3:30 mark of the third period. Elsewhere, Mairbek Taisumov was an easy choice for a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus thanks to his first-round knockout of Felipe Silva in a preliminary lightweight encounter. Early in the frame, Silva attempted to walk his foe down, but after he missed with a right hand, Taisumov connected with a clean counter right. Silva immediately fell face first to the canvas, giving Taisumov the emphatic triumph 84 seconds after the bout began. Finally, newcomer Zibat Magomedsharipov captured the card’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for a second-round submission victory against Mike Santiago at featherweight.

Tatsuya Kawajiri to Compete on Rizin’s Oct. 15 Card for Spot in Bantamweight Grand Prix

UFC, Pride and Dream veteran Tatsuya Kawajiri will square off against Gabriel Leite de Oliveira on Oct. 15 for a wildcard spot in Rizin’s bantamweight grand prix at the end of the year. The Japanese promotion announced the bout on Friday. The event takes place at Marine Messe Fukuoka, in Fukouka, Japan, and will feature three bouts in the opening round of the men’s 135-pound bracket as well as the beginning of a women’s super atomweight (108-pound) tournament. Kawajiri vs. Oliveira will be contested at a 138-pound catch-weight, and the winner will be entered into the bantamweight grand prix as a wild card for the next round on Dec. 29. The victor will have to make 135 pounds for that contest. Both Kawajiri and Oliveira are natural featherweights. “Kawajiri sent me a picture in July, during the madness of putting together the event. I thought that he just wanted to bug me about getting on the October event, but the picture was him standing on a scale at [138 pounds], and he told me he wanted in on the bantamweight tournament,” RIZIN General Manager Nobuhiko Takada said in a release.

UFC-Rotterdam results: Rustam Khabilov's aggression earns him win over Desmond Green

Following two competitive rounds, both men seemed fresh to start the third. Green remained up to the challenge of Khabilov’s takedowns but struggled to set the tone with much offense of his own. The two seemed closely matched in every exchange, but it was Khabilov who was generally the aggressor. Green did get a takedown and move to the back, but it was in the very final seconds of the contest, but it was too little, too late, and Khabilov took a decision win, 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 on the judges’ cards.

10 September Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator MMA. *** Ben Askren has earned a healthy living outside the auspices of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, far away from the glitz, glamour and glare of the world’s foremost mixed martial arts promotion. Askren will put a 16-0 record on the line when he defends his welterweight crown against Zebaztian Kadestam in the One Championship “Shanghai” headliner on Saturday at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China. There, the four-time NCAA All-American wrestler and 2008 Olympian can continue to cement his place as one of the premier mixed martial artists not under UFC control. Splitting his training between Roufusport and Evolve MMA, Askren has rattled off back-to-back victories since his ill-fated April 2015 encounter with Luis Santos resulted in a no-contest. The 33-year-old last appeared at One Championship “Dynasty of Heroes” on May 26, when he submitted Agilan Thani with a second-round arm-triangle choke.

UFC-Rotterdam results: Aleksandar Rakic dominates Francimar Barroso over 15 minutes

The two fighters traded strikes to start, picking single punches and kicks as they moved around the cage. A Rakic uppercut seemed the best shot of the early exchanges, but both men refused to back down. Rakic’s crisp punches definitely earned the respect of his opponent as the round wore on, and Barroso’s offense slowed a touch as he focused on defense and potentially taking the fight to the mat. Another Rakic uppercut did land flush along the way, and the first ended in the clinch.

UFC-Rotterdam results: Zabit Magomedsharipov scintillating in UFC debut

Santiago’s team begged for aggression in the second, and he responded, but Magomedsharipov’s creativity provided him plenty of opportunities to attack. The action did move to the floor, but Magomedsharipov’s rangy frame proved too much there, as well. Santiago threatened with some options of his own on the floor, but Magomedsharipov never looked in trouble, eventually moving to the back and locking in a rear-naked choke, earning the tap with 38 seconds left in the second round.
