Mark Hunt Hands Roy Nelson First KO Loss of Octagon Career at UFC Fight Night

Mark Hunt watched as Roy Nelson fell face first. | Photo: Mitch Viquez/Zuffa/UFC/Getty UFC Fight Night “Hunt vs. Nelson” is in the books, with the heavyweight main event of Roy Nelson against Mark Hunt ending as many predicted, with a knockout. The five-round affair only lasted eight minutes, as Hunt caught “Big Country” square on the chin with a perfectly-timed uppercut which sent Nelson face first to the mat. The loss was the second via knockout in Nelson’s 10-year career. Hunt continues to impress in the UFC, parlaying his legendary performance against Antonio Silva with a equally satiating outcome for fans of “The Super Samoan.” After the bout, Hunt kept it simple in regards to what he hopes comes next. “Anyone in the top 10, that’s always good for me,” Hunt said. With the victory, Hunt stretches his record to (10-8-1), with an impressive (5-2-1) mark under the UFC banner. Nelson (20-10, 7-6 UFC) has now dropped three out of four fights, all to elite competition with the likes of Stipe Miocic , Daniel Cormier and now, Hunt.

UFC Fight Night 52 results: Miesha Tate cruises, hands Rin Nakai her first loss

Nakai ducked under a Tate uppercut early in the second, and again the Japanese fighter wanted a takedown. But Tate didn’t let her have it. Nakai paid the price for catching another kick as Tate blasted away with punches – and still managed to stay upright. But Nakai stayed after it, and took Tate’s back with both hooks in. Tate slid her off, though, and reversed position to get on top to work out of Nakai’s guard. Tate landed big elbows from the top as Nakai looked for a submission. The fight went back to the feet with 90 seconds left in the round, but Nakai couldn’t get anything done.

José Mujica: is this the world’s most radical president? | Giles Tremlett

The day Lucía was due to swear Pepe in as president, his publicist Pancho Vernazza had arranged to meet him at 8am to go over the speech. Vernazza, a high-powered Montevideo advertising executive, was a few minutes late, and found that an impatient Mujica had already wandered off. “He’d gone for a spin on his tractor,” Vernazza told me. Mujica hired him for a presidential campaign that started with a fight to win the Broad Front nomination against a moderate social democrat, Danilo Astori – who would eventually become Mujica’s vice-president, ensuring that his would be a business-friendly government. It was, Vernazza jokes, the meeting of a leftwing and a rightwing anarchist. Business acquaintances threatened to leave the country if Mujica won. “In 40 years of professional work, I’ve never met anyone with his capacity to learn and be flexible,” he said. “He is the least authoritarian of all the politicians I’ve known.” Vernazza also found him chaotic, unstructured and gaffe-ridden. But native political intelligence and a talent for improvisation saw him rapidly mutate from a rebel in ripped jerseys to a serious presidential candidate.

Wanderlei Silva Announces Retirement, Claims UFC Took Away Desire to Fight

After 49 professional fights, Wanderlei Silva has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. “The Axe Murderer” made his announcement on Friday via YouTube. In a statement that lasted more than 13 minutes and ranged from angry diatribe to emotional farewell, Silva said he no longer has the desire to fight. And he blames the UFC for extinguishing that competitive fire. “Today is a very sad day for me. Unfortunately the UFC took away my desire to fight. I can’t do this anymore. I can’t keep being treated this way,” he said. “And with a heavy heart I come here today to declare: I am stepping down from the ring. After today, Wanderlei Silva will not fight again. My career is over. Because I don’t have the stage to perform where the athletes get the proper respect. For these reasons, I have had enough.” Silva pointed out the physical toll MMA takes on the body and expressed anger at the tactics he claims the UFC uses to get the fighters to compete. “They are wearing down the athletes. They make them fight under any circumstances and any conditions,” he said.

World Wide Web inventor slams Internet fast lanes: ‘It’s bribery.’

Berners-Lee pushed back against opponents of net neutrality regulation who argue that applying new rules on ISPs is tantamount to regulating the Internet. There's a difference between regulating providers of broadband and the services that run on top of it, said Berners-Lee. Strong net neutrality rules would help preserve that line dividing the two and limit the incentive of ISPs to meddle in the market for services.

After KO of Roy Nelson, Mark Hunt Wants Spot on UFC Fight Night Card in Sydney

Mark Hunt wants a quick turnaround for his next fight . | Taro Irei/Sherdog.com Mark Hunt went approximately 10 months between his scintillating majority draw with Antonio Silva and his one-punch knockout of the durable Roy Nelson at UFC Fight Night in Japan on Saturday. The 40-year-old Kiwi would prefer that his next layoff be considerably shorter. “I feel pretty good -- no injuries -- and hopefully I can get on the Sydney card in four weeks,” Hunt said at the post-fight press conference following the event at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. “Dana White? Joe Silva?” Hunt’s sense of time is a little off -- UFC Fight Night "Rockhold vs. Bisping" is about seven weeks away, but his point was made nonetheless. “The Super Samoan” wants to fight close to home, and the Nov. 8 card at the Allphones Arena in Sydney fits that bill. With much of the heavyweight division’s Top 10 booked for the rest of 2014, Hunt might have to make some concessions for his wish to come true. That could mean taking a fight against an opponent outside the top 10.

Mark Hunt's long, strange journey to becoming an irony-free contender

That’s always the disconnect, when you talk to Hunt. He doesn’t say much, and what he does say makes it seem like he’d prefer to say even less, but ask him how he feels about those fans who hold him up as some kind of lovable tough guy and the man gets damn near verbose. He’s not here to be your underdog, your fat guy who can take a punch. He’s not particularly interested in talking about how the UFC once thought he was so terrible it would be better off paying him not to fight. He is not impressed with moral victories or atta-boy points.

Alistair Overeem on injuring Jon Jones in sparring: ‘I feel terrible’

"It was the truth, so what are you going to do?" Overeem said. "Anybody can say the truth. It is what it is. You cannot make it any more nice, right? If somebody asks anybody in the gym what happened, ‘hey what happened with Jon,’ ‘yeah he was warming up with Alistair’…I mean, should they lie about it or something? It was the truth. That’s what happened, and there was no foul play, it was not intentional, it was just a very unfortunate accident." Jones and Cormier got into a brawl during staredowns at the initial UFC 178 press conference in the MGM Grand lobby, which only served to blow the fight up even more. But just as that rivalry began to turn into must-see theater, Jones suffered the injury while sparring with the ’Reem. When asked if there were any hard feelings between him and Jones after the injury, Overeem said not at all. "Never has been," he said. "And I felt terrible man, because I was looking forward to that fight. Of course obviously [Jones]’s had a great career, he’s a great athlete, but I also like him as a friend. So, you never want to do that to your buddies that are your teammates, because you feel terrible.

Miocic has been on a tear since joining the UFC ranks in 2011, winning six of his seven fights. 45 Kang, Tanaka Steal the Show in Prelim War

SAITAMA, September 20 – Bantamweights Kyung Ho Kang and Michinori Tanaka thrilled fans at the Saitama Super Arena for three rounds Saturday, with Kang pulling off a razor-thin split decision in UFC Fight Night prelim action that could have easily gone the other way. Scores were 29-28 twice, and 28-29 for Busan, South Korea’s Kang, now 13-7 with 1 NC; Tanaka falls to 10-1. Kang stunned Tanaka with a punch in the first exchange to open the fight, and as Tanaka looked to regroup, he got rocked again. In the ensuing scramble that hit the mat, Kang got into the mount position and then took his opponent’s back. A rear naked choke attempt followed, but Tanaka was able to get free and eventually return to his feet, where he sought his own takedown. On the mat, the two reversed positions more than once, Kang taking the back again in the final minute. Confidently moving forward and catching Tanaka with hard shots, Kang had success as round two opened, only to wind up on the mat, victim of a Tanaka takedown. Kang remained aggressive from the bottom, working on a kimura that allowed him to get into the top position.
