New App Lets You Boycott Monsanto And More By Scanning Your Shopping Cart
(Forbes) In her keynote speech at last year’s annual Netroots Nation gathering, Darcy Burner pitched a seemingly simple idea to the thousands of bloggers and web developers in the audience. The former Microsoft programmer and congressional candidate proposed a smartphone app allowing shoppers to swipe barcodes to check whether conservative billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch were behind a product on the shelves.

Uncovering Hidden Text on a 500-Year-Old Map That Guided Columbus | WIRED
But that’s about to change. A team of researchers is using a technique called multispectral imaging to uncover the hidden text. They scanned the map last month at Yale University and expect to start extracting readable text in the next few months, says Chet Van Duzer, an independent map scholar who’s leading the project, which was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Utopia's Producers Know Utopia Is Impossible—That's the Point | WIRED
But it’s not as simple as a revolving door. So far, the show’s biggest blow-ups—the ones that push contestants to the brink of leaving the compound—have stemmed from conflicts of class and privilege. Toothless (white) hillbilly Red clashes majorly with (black) ex-military chef Aaron when he is forbidden from cooking and eating a chicken that has died of unknown causes. Feeling unwelcome, Red almost walks out, until Dave, an ex-con and self-described homeless son of a prostitute, convinces him to stay—only to be “banished” from the compound himself in the following episode, thanks to seemingly irresolvable issues. His replacement: Kristen, a young, blonde woman who doesn’t “have time for fat people” and whose skillset is “sowing the seeds of drama .”

Fighter Diet News, by Pauline Nordin: Get Buff, Get Lean
So Much Hype, So Little Time | FIGHTLAND
“You see plenty of fighters going in with records like 3-1, they’re not quite there yet, but over the space of a few years they get better and then eventually they might get up to title contention. I believe with Conor and Gunni, they did all their work outside of the UFC. They had already arrived at that elite level before they got in there, so I wasn’t surprised that when they did get in there was title talk within one or two fights.”

Mike De La Torre vs. Mark Eddiva added to UFC Fight Night 55 in Sydney
De La Torre dropped his UFC debut with a split-decision loss to Mark Bocek in April in Canada. His next time out was a submission loss to Brian Ortega at UFC on FOX 11 in Orlando. But a failed drug test for Ortega overturned that result to a no-contest.
Big underdog Chris Cariaso on Demetrious Johnson: 'He's going to get dominated'
Perhaps. But is Cariaso (17-5) the guy to pull it off? With all due respect to "Kamikaze," history doesn't paint give that indication. Cariaso is a very respectable 4-2 as a flyweight in the UFC with three straight wins coming in. But he also has losses to John Moraga and Jussier Formiga, who are both ahead of him in the rankings. Moraga, who Johnson dominated in a title fight, finished Cariaso via guillotine.
Trading Shots: Downes and Fowlkes on Wanderlei Silva's retirement announcement
Silva did make some strong points with regards to the Barao situation. As a former fighter, I agree with a lot of it. It sounds like you even agree with with some of the points. How do you feel when the tables are reversed, though? The only people that turn on fighters quicker than the “UFC machine” are fans and media. Everything that Silva said about how the UFC treated Barao can be flipped to the other side. Say Silva did take that fight and looked terrible. Would the next day’s Ben Fowlkes piece have read, “Hey guys, lets give Wandy a break. He worked really hard”? When you’re watching NFL games on Sunday and your team’s quarterback throws an interception, do you say, “It’s all right. I can’t imagine what type of stress he’s under. It’s just a game after all!”
Hindsight - UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Nelson & Bellator 125 in retrospect
This is exactly why analysis can feel so useless at times. There was no good tape to watch or fights to examine going into this card. When two guys have been out as long as Sadollah and Yoshihiro have, you can't assume much will be the same from their last fights (even if it is). Yet, the general vibe from their time out was that Yoshihiro was in better fight shape, that he was hungrier. That ended up being exactly the case, as Sadollah looked really rusty and off rhythm as Yoshihiro peppered him from the outside and took him down with ease inside. Sometimes the gut is just as accurate as the mind.

Video: Watch UFC 178's Demetrious Johnson starch Joseph Benavidez
Johnson is a massive favorite in the fight – as much as 16-to-1 at some sites. That would presumably make another win for him somewhat short of his biggest victories so far. But before his fight on Saturday, take a look back at what may have been his biggest win to date.
The Ultimate Fighter Episode 3 Preview: Time for the Rematch
Chances are, however, that Penne comes out and does the same or even worse to Ellis in part two of their series. Penne is a threat to win the whole tournament with her long reach and quick-minded jiu-jitsu game on the ground. Penne has been in much deeper waters than Ellis, and she'll look to drown the Team Melendez fighter this week and put her squad up 3-0 in the competition.

Video: UFC champ Chris Weidman glad 'Jacare' Souza thinks he can beat him
“I want people to believe they can beat me, because that’s going to make for a bigger fight and a tougher challenge,” Weidman told MMAjunkie. “I really think Lyoto Machida believed he was going to beat me (at UFC 175, and that’s why I think it was an exciting fight. The more guys who truly believe they’re going to win and aren’t mentally defeated, that’s what I want. I don’t want to just run over people because they don’t believe in themselves. I want to dominate guys who believe in themselves.”
Tito Ortiz claims UFC blocked Bellator from running show in Anaheim
"I think it's kinda cool actually to tell you the truth, see how much weight my name can hold," Ortiz said. "i think the big difference in all of it is, all the fans get to watch free fights instead of having to pay for fight. They get to watch free on Spike, and I think diehard fight fans will be watching no matter what, Tito Ortiz fans will be there no matter what, and Stephanie Bonnar fans will be there no matter what."
17 Questions for Khabib Nurmagomedov
Khabib Nurmagomedov has started his career with 22 straight
victories. | Jeff Sherwood/Sherdog.com
There may be no brighter young star than Khabib
Nurmagomedov in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s lightweight division.
The 25-year-old Dagestani grappler has compiled a perfect 22-0
record as a professional, the last six of those victories coming
inside the UFC’s hallowed Octagon. Though surgery to repair a knee
injury will keep him sidelined until 2015, Nurmagomedov remains
very much on the short list of contenders for the UFC lightweight
title, which currently rests on the waist of Anthony
In this exclusive interview with Sherdog.com, Nurmagomedov
discusses the recovery from his knee injury, his upbringing and his
future plans in the UFC’s cutthroat 155-pound weight class:

Chris Cariaso to critics: Watch UFC 178 to see why I deserved title shot

Making the Grade: Passes/Fails from UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Nelson
Except for Miesha Tate vs. Rin Nakai, there wasn't a bad fight at UFC Fight Night in Japan. All of them were above average. Who knew that Richard Walsh vs. Kiichi Kunimoto would have been that much fun? Or Katsunori Kikuno vs. Sam Sicilia? Silva and Shelby did. It's probably hard enough just keeping track of who all these fighters are, never mind putting them into matchups that accentuate their strengths. Silva and Shelby don't get nearly enough credit. There are less major drawing cards now than maybe ever in the UFC, but every event seems to be fun and exciting, whether it's on pay-per-view or Fight Pass.
UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Nelson results - Winners and Losers
Rin Nakai - I've gone back and forth on where on this list Nakai really belongs. On the one hand, after a demoralizing first round, she was able to come back, adjust and refine her timing, and make for a fairly competitive latter half against a former contender. On the other hand, I don't think that not getting blown out of the water exactly qualifies you as a "winner," and there are some serious issues with her long-term prospects in the division Her stand-up was nonexistent, she appeared to be at a total disadvantage strength-wise, and, supposedly, she and her camp are uninterested in a move down to a more suitable weight class. It's hard to imagine a lengthy UFC career for her if she can't make big moves in one or two of these respects.
Glover Teixeira plans to dominate Phil Davis, ‘get that f---ing belt’ soon
"Phil Davis is at the top for a long time, he’s a tough guy, so he’s another step in the division," he said. "I don’t think about Davis, (Daniel) Cormier or other top fighters. I want to fight and beat a top opponent, then fight another top opponent, and then fight for the belt again. This time, I will get that f---ing belt."
Video: Melvin Manhoef scores faceplant knockout over Doug Marshall at Bellator 125
R1: Marshall fires first with an outside low kick but he gets a tad off-balance on his one-two and Manhoef counters with a left to the head. Manhoef's left roundhouse kick connects low and we pause while Marshall recovers. On the restart, Manhoef crams a huge overhand right down Marshall's throat but "The Rhino" takes it like a champ and fires back with a left and a one-two. Step-in knee and high right roundhouse kick from Manhoef but Marshall defends well.
