UFC Results: Roy Nelson KOs “Bigfoot” Silva In Round 2

Neither Nelson nor Silva wanted to get too close to each other and the second kicked off with a lot of missed shots. Silva picked up the pace and turned the tables of Nelson, pressing him up against the fence this time making him work for freedom. Nelson was able to escape with ease and eventually charged with his signature right hand combination that whiffed. Two jabs from Nelson connected and backed Silva up to the fence, allowing Nelson to pick his shots and fire off when Silva least expected it. Silva tried to come in and take control, but Nelson dropped him with a short uppercut and jumped in for the kill. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva thought he was okay and protested the stoppage, but it seemed fair.

Opinion: Cash Versus Control Ahead of the Big Apple

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The Ultimate Fighting Championship has spent nearly two decades over two ownership groups untangling red tape, bad ideas and politically vested interests towards one goal: the UFC inside Madison Square Garden. Seven years in a row, buttressed by the Fertitta brothers' money and political clout, bills legalizing mixed martial arts in New York passed the state's Senate, but never made it beyond the State Assembly until this past March 22, when it finally passed and Gov. Andrew Cuomo put pen to paper a few weeks later. And that was supposed to be that. While there were large preparations and logistical struggles forthcoming for the New York State Athletic Commission as the office began to regulate the sport, no one ever expected the UFC's Nov. 12 date at MSG to get pushed back once it was on the books. However, the UFC's milestone moment is now mired in a new kind of controversy and it's not due to political forces external to MMA.

New Bellator MMA Signee Chael Sonnen: ‘I’ve Got a Higher Juice Concentrate Than Tropicana’

Chael Sonnen was a perennial contender at his peak and he was without question among the best in the world in his division. His immense talent nearly got him the UFC’s middleweight championship when he dominated all-time great Anderson Silva until he succumbed to a last-round triangle choke at UFC 117. But aside from his triumphs in the cage, Sonnen has long been one of the most polarizing fighters in the sport. He transformed himself from a regular contender into a first-class heel with his mastered trash talk, bravado and self-promotion. People either loved or hated him, but when his initial MMA career was effectively over a few years ago amid three performance-enhancing drugs scandals, he became public enemy No. 1 in the sport. Sonnen last competed at UFC 167 in 2013, when he was stopped by Rashad Evans in the first round. He had lost three of four at that point and his retirement, coupled with his PED issues, appeared to mean the end of the line for the Oregonian. He was still floating around the sport as a radio and television personality, but the life of Sonnen the fighter was over.

Opinion: Time for the UFC to Look Over its Shoulder

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The Ultimate Fighting Championship should probably start looking over its shoulder right about now because Bellator MMA is coming -- not today or tomorrow, not next month or next year, but the Scott Coker -led promotion is coming. It starts quietly and slowly ramps up, and before you know it, you’re looking over your shoulder when it’s too late. You can shrug off Bellator as a non-threat, but sooner or later, it will be nipping at your heels if you aren’t careful, and the UFC better start paying attention because Bellator isn’t here to compete; it’s here to win. Right now, it all sounds a little ridiculous to think that Bellator can actively compete with the UFC. The same was said in the mid-1990s when World Championship Wrestling sought to compete with the World Wrestling Federation. However, steps were slowly taken to snare away the recognizable talent from Vince McMahon’s clutches while welcoming some of the other talent that didn’t get its just due.

10 Badass Facts About UFC Heavyweight Champ Stipe Miocic

Heavyweight class carries the most weight not just in the world of mixed matial arts, but in all martial arts, fights and champions in this category always get a lot of well-deserved attention, so being a Ultimate Fighting Championship Heavyweight champion is definitely reserved only for the biggest, hardest, toughest badasses. When Stipe Miocic knocked out Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198 and grabbed that title belt, becoming only the 15th man to do so, the whole MMA world took notice of the Ohio-born fighter, and we started digging for 10 badass facts about new heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic . Most strikes landed in a single fight Even if Miocic didn't win the UFC Heavyweight title he would have his name in the history books of MMA as he managed to land most strikes in a single fight - 361! Mark Hunt had the misfortune to be on the receiving end of Miocic's rampage, he got hit 119 times in third round only, and the bout ended with the largest strike margin in UFC history - +315 for Miocic. He came to UFC as undefeated Before coming to the UFC Miocic was undefeated with a 6-0 record, and he finished first five of them with knockouts in first and second rounds of bouts.

UFC Exec Tom Wright: Georges St. Pierre Not a Lock to Headline UFC 206 in Toronto

It appears the date and venue for Georges St. Pierre ’s comeback fight in the UFC is still far from a certainty. The former welterweight champion recently told “UFC Tonight” that he was targeting UFC 206 , which takes place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Dec. 10, for his prospective return. However, St. Pierre’s return largely hinges on his ability to negotiate a deal with the Las Vegas-based promotion, and so far there hasn’t been any news from either party on that front. Tom Wright, general manager for UFC operations in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, believes that UFC 206 will be fine even if a native star like St. Pierre doesn’t headline the card. "We don't need a Canadian necessarily to headline the event," Wright, who was in Australia to promote the Nov. 27 UFC Fight Night card, told Submission Radio . "The last event that we had in Canada did not feature around a Canadian, so frankly it's no different than here [in Australia]. Our fans are sophisticated fans in Canada and they're knowledgeable and sophisticated here in Australia.

Legacy Fighting Championship, Resurrection Fighting Alliance Merge to Form New Promotion

Two of mixed martial arts’ top regional promotions are joining forces. Legacy Fighting Championship and Resurrection Fighting Alliance announced Monday that the organizations are merging to form Legacy Fighting Alliance. The new promotion will officially launch in January 2017; RFA President Ed Soares will serve as CEO, while Sven Bean will be the chief operating officer. "This is an exciting day for everyone involved," Soares said. "What our two companies have accomplished individually is remarkable, but the sky is truly the limit when you consider what will come next. "Our athletes will have an unrivaled platform to compete in front of a nationally televised audience — not to mention in more than 40 countries around the world — and prove they are worthy of a spot at the sport's highest level. Our existing companies have placed more than 100 fighters in just the UFC and Bellator, alone. Quite simply, for the fighters on our roster, the future is now.” Both Legacy FC and RFA aired on AXS-TV, and nothing will change on that front, as the network has retained exclusive rights to air Legacy Fighting Alliance events next year.
