Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘St. Preux vs. Okami’

Jessica Andrade made her case for another crack at the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s strawweight title, and she made it in the strongest possible terms. The Parana Vale Tudo standout battered, bloodied and bested Claudia Gadelha in the UFC Fight Night 117 co-main event, picking up a surprisingly one-sided unanimous decision on Friday at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Scores were 30-25, 30-26 and 30-27, Andrade doing enough damage to warrant three 10-8 rounds from the cageside judges. Gadelha controlled the first half of the first round, but little else went her way. Andrade overwhelmed the Andre Pederneiras protégé with high-octane offense, pairing powerful slam takedowns with ferocious ground-and-pound. FightMetric statistics were staggering: Andrade executed four takedowns, five guard passes and outlanded the three-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion by a 242-47 margin in total strikes. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “St. Preux vs. Okami,” here are five matches that ought to be made: Jessica Andrade vs.

UFC Fight Night 117 Prelims: Keita Nakamura Edges Alex Morono on Razor-Thin Scorecards

Keita Nakamura eeks out a split decision win over a tough Alex Morono to close out our #UFCJapan prelims! — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) September 23, 2017 Keita Nakamura defended his territory. The former Sengoku , Deep and Shooto Pacific Rim champion posted his seventh win in nine appearances, as he eked out a split decision over Alex Morono in the featured UFC Fight Night 117 “St. Preux vs. Okami” prelim on Friday at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Scores were 29-28 and 29-28 for Nakamura, 29-28 for Morono. Output was an issue for Nakamura (33-8-2, 3-5 UFC), who took a quality-over-quantity approach. He had Morono (13-5, 2-1 UFC) reeling with a first-round body kick and opened a significant gash above his right eye. Nakamura withstood multi-punch volleys from the onetime Legacy Fighting Championship titleholder in the middle frame and an overhand right that opened a cut on the side of his head in the third. He upped his aggression over the final five minutes, executed a pair of takedowns against Morono and did just enough to earn the judges’ favor.

Ovince St. Preux Still Wants ‘Shogun’ Rematch Following UFC Fight Night 117 Triumph

Ovince St. Preux didn’t get the opponent he was initially promised at UFC Fight Night 117 , but he still made the most of his evening. The former University of Tennessee linebacker earned the third Von Flue submission of his career in Friday’s headliner at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, tapping short-notice foe Yushin Okami 1:50 into the first frame. “OSP” now owns three of the five Von Flue choke submissions in UFC history after eliciting tapouts from Marcos Rogerio de Lima , Nikita Krylov and Okami. “To be honest I was really going for another submission. I was going for a catch kimura, power kimura type of deal,” St. Preux said on Fox Sports 1. “He just grabbed my head. And the moment he grabbed my head, instinct took over. I just locked his arm in, and I pretty much knew when I locked it in he was gonna go out.” Okami shot for a takedown within the bout’s first 10 seconds. St. Preux sprawled on the attempt and Okami elected to hang on to a guillotine as his foe settled into half guard. Eventually, St.

UFC Fight Night 117 Bonuses: Andrade, Gadelha, St. Preux, Saki Receive $50K

The bout that many viewed as UFC Fight Night 117 ’s true main event was also the evening’s most entertaining bout. Strawweight contenders Jessica Andrade and Claudia Gadelha banked $50,000 apiece for “Fight of the Night” in their co-headlining affair at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on Friday night. Gadelha started well, getting the better of Andrade during exchanges in round one. However, Andrade took over down the stretch, as she slammed her opponent to the mat repeatedly and unloaded with punishing ground-and-pound in rounds two and three. While Gadelha hung tough, it was Andrade who emerged with a clear-cut unanimous decision triumph. Meanwhile, Ovince St. Preux ’s third career Von Flue choke submission netted him a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” paycheck in the official main event. “OSP” sprawled on an early Okami takedown and settled in half-guard with his foe hanging on to a guillotine. That allowed St. Preux to secure the choke, move to side control and get the tapout 1:50 into the opening frame. Elsewhere, kickboxing star Gokhan Saki didn’t disappoint in his promotional debut, capturing a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his first-round knockout of Henrique da Silva at light heavyweight.

By The Numbers: UFC Fight Night Japan

In a patchwork main event that was already a somewhat bizarre matchup, Ovince St. Preux pulled the improbable once again. For the third time in his Ultimate Fighting Championship career, the former University of Tennessee linebacker submitted an opponent in the Octagon with a Von Flue choke. This time the victim was Yushin Okami , who was rendered unconscious by the maneuver 1:50 into the opening round of the UFC Fight Night 117 headliner in Saitama, Japan, on Friday night. “OSP” could very well be patenting the “Von Preux” name very soon. For now, there is more to examine from the night that was in the Far East. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 117, with statistics courtesy of 5: Successful Von Flue chokes in UFC history. St. Preux is the owner of three of those finishes, having tapped Okami, Marcos Rogerio de Lima and Nikita Krylov with the hold. 7: Finishes in UFC competition for St. Preux since 2013, tying him with Conor McGregor for fourth-most among all fighters in the Las Vegas-based promotion.

With ‘Handcuffs Off’ After UFC Departure, Roy Nelson Sees Many Opportunities in Bellator

Although he doesn’t have the most sparkling record in recent years, Roy Nelson remains one of the most recognizable heavyweights in mixed martial arts. Now that “Big Country” has left the UFC following a 19-bout tenure for Bellator MMA, he believes he can convert even more fans to his brand of action thanks to the platform that the new promotion provides. “Why do you think UFC has been dying? Because they’re on Fox, Fox Sports 1 or whatever. Viacom is always on the edge because they have MTV, they have Spike, they’re switching over to Paramount,” Nelson told “They’re all about changing with the times. They always bring in new demographics. How many women actually watch Spike TV? I think women actually watch ‘Cops’ or ‘Bar Rescue.’ But then you ask them have you ever tuned into Fox Sports 1, they’d be like, ‘Hell no.’ “In other words, what Spike does is they bring in a whole new demographic. That brings in the casual fan. The casual fan that doesn’t actually watch fights, that’s the fan that I’m gonna turn them into watching MMA. That’s one thing I do really well is I turn a casual fan into an MMA fan.

With Limited Time Left in MMA, Benson Henderson Wants to Make Rest of Career Memorable

Benson Henderson isn’t one of those guys who plans on hanging around mixed martial arts into his 40s – or even his late 30s, for that matter.   The former UFC lightweight champion turns 34 in November, and he recognizes that he has reached the tail end of his prime years. Henderson, who faces Patricky Freire in the Bellator 183 headliner on Sept. 23, wants to make the most of the time he has left.   “I don’t have too many more fights left in my body. I can fight for a certain period, and I want to get as many fights as I can in that timeframe,” Henderson told “I want to have four, five, six more fights in the next year. I want to get in; I want to get out. Because I’m not in my prime for that much longer, it’s in my head. So I want to make my time as worth it as possible.   “I want to get there and have as many more fights as I can get. That’s big fights at 170 [pounds] here, short-notice 170 here, fight for the title at 155. No problem. I’ll do all of it. I’m fully intending on working my ass off so if those opportunities present themselves, I shine.

The Must-See Fights of Bellator 183

They are two of the most dynamic strikers on the Bellator MMA roster, and the promotion would be hard-pressed to make a better match at 170 pounds. Former Cage Rage champion Paul Daley will meet fellow Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Lorenz Larkin in a crackling welterweight showcase at Bellator 183 “Henderson vs. Pitbull” on Saturday at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. Their three-round battle figures to clear the air in the divisional pecking order behind champion Douglas Lima and No. 1 contender Rory MacDonald , two men who will lock horns for the 170-pound crown in January. Daley has rattled off six wins in eight appearances. The 33-year-old Englishman owns a long-established reputation as one of the sport’s premier knockout artists, having secured 29 of his 39 career victories by KO or TKO. His list of victims includes Brennan Ward , Scott Smith , Dustin Hazelett , Martin Kampmann , Daniel Weichel and Duane Ludwig . Daley last competed at Bellator 179 on May 19, when he submitted to a second-round rear-naked choke from the aforementioned MacDonald.

Knockin' Out Neckbeards Part 2: Hannah Scoggins Murders FloCombat

With thousands of miles driven and rag-tag motel sleepovers, the FloCombat crew has proven to be gluttons for punishment. They also tend to get beaten up from time to time. Putting boots to the ground is our thing around here, and finding out exactly what fighters go through in the midst of the fray is how we gain a better understanding of the chaos at large. Simply put: We are doers not talkers at Camp FloCombat, and that has yet to work out in our favor. Especially not for Hunter Homistek. The resident El Gigante of the FloCombat crew took his first ass whooping in Palm Springs when "The Big Glow" gloved up with UFC featherweight wrecking machine Cub Swanson during the inaugural leg of the #FCRoadTrip series. A few crippling body shots were enough for "Killer Cub" to put his stamp on Homistek's fighting career, but just like any good product of the American Rust Belt, the up-and-coming Ginger Ninja wanted to find redemption. Enter Hannah Scoggins. The amateur talent has built a strong buzz during her five showings inside the cage, and she agreed to throw down with Hunter during a stop at Revolution MMA in Spartanburg, SC.
