Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Arlovski vs. Barnett’

Peter Sobotta wants some attention in the crowded Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division. Sobotta registered his eighth win in nine appearances, as he cruised to a unanimous decision over former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship titleholder Nicolas Dalby at UFC Fight Night “Arlovski vs. Barnett” on Saturday at Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany. The 29-year-old Planet Eater representative entered the Octagon as a +167 underdog, according to BetDSI.com, and walked away with 30-26 nods from all three cageside judges. Dalby (-200) was one step behind throughout the 15-minute clash. Sobotta decked him with a right uppercut inside the first five minutes and put significant damage on the Dane’s left eye. The Dean Lister -trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt later advanced to Dalby’s back, tying a bow on a dominant round one and setting the table for what was to come. Sobotta executed a pair of takedowns in the middle stanza, where he achieved full mount and further distanced himself from his counterpart.

10 September Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and the World Series of Fighting. *** Never has violence seemed like more of a forgone conclusion. Two-time K-1 World Max champion Andy Souwer returns to the mixed martial arts arena opposite UFC veteran Daron Cruickshank at Rizin Fighting Federation 2 on Sept. 25 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. It will mark the second event Rizin Fighting Federation in 2016, as the organization continues in its attempt to fill the major Japanese MMA void left by the fall of Pride Fighting Championships , Dream and Sengoku . Souwer, 33, made his professional MMA debut under the Rizin banner on New Year’s Eve, when he knocked out Yuichiro Nagashima with punches 5:29 into the first round. The Dutchman has compiled a 159-19-1 record as a kickboxer, including wins over Masato Kobayashi, Buakaw Por Pramuk and Nieky Holzken.

Meaningful MMA exists beyond the confines of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and World Series of Fighting. In this monthly series, Sherdog.com recaps the month that was on the regional circuit in mixed martial arts: *** Perhaps Freddy Assuncao has begun to live up to the expectations that once surrounded him as a fighter some viewed as the gold standard among MMA prospects. Assuncao captured the Titan Fighting Championship lightweight crown, as he choked Gesias Cavalcante unconscious with a fourth-round guillotine in the Titan 40 headliner on Aug. 5 at the Bank United Center in Coral Gables, Florida. Cavalcante bowed out 27 seconds into round four, the two-time K-1 Hero’s grand prix winner’s two-fight winning streak at an end. The 32-year-old Assuncao has won nine consecutive bouts dating back to his November 2009 submission loss to Jim Alers . The younger brother of Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans Junior Assuncao and Raphael Assuncao , he has finished each of his last two opponents with chokes.

Georges St. Pierre Says Return is Up to UFC: ‘They Know the Terms I Want’

If and when Georges St. Pierre makes his return to the UFC , it won’t be a one-time thing. The former welterweight champion told UFC Tonight on Wednesday that he plans on making an extended run in the Las Vegas-based promotion. The possibility of a St. Pierre comeback became rooted in reality earlier this summer when the Tristar Gym representative acknowledged that he was in negotiations with the UFC . It appears the only obstacle standing between St. Pierre and the Octagon is the ability to reach an agreement with the organization he called home for nearly a decade. “I want to come back,” St. Pierre said. “They know the terms I want. Trust me, I’m very reasonable so it’s up to them. We tried. My agent tried to reach them and they're hard to reach, but I guess they're going to come back soon. Hopefully, we'll see." Not surprisingly, St. Pierre confirmed that he would lose money if he returned under the parameters of his old UFC deal, mainly because of lost sponsors due to the Reebok outfitting policy. "If you see it from my perspective, I'm making a lot of money now even though I'm not fighting, and my contract is old," St.

Victorious Ryan Bader, Alexander Gustafsson Have Same Goal in Mind

Ryan Bader won a “Performance of the Night” bonus when he knocked Ilir Latifi out cold at UFC Fight Night “Arlovski vs. Barnett” ( online betting ) with a knee to the face in their matchup. Alexander Gustafsson dominated Jan Blachowicz in their co-main event showdown and with both men having their hands raised in victory, it inches them both closer to a potential crack at the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title. Gustafsson already had a chance to capture it but he was edged by then-champ Jon Jones via decision. Bader never has gotten over that hump, but the perennial contender has come close umpteen times. Both men know what they want but their mindsets going forward are slightly different. “I got into the mode of winning at all costs,” Bader said at the post-fight press conference. “I’m not taking it too seriously and I want to have fun out there and take risks. I had a great mindset going in and it allowed me to go in there and take more risks.” His risks paid off in that he got a highlight reel knockout win for his effort.

Opinion: A Logical Character Sketch of a Logical Man

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Now and forever in this sport's history, the final day of August will be the day that the MMA world found out that nigh-eternal Ultimate Fighting Championship matchmaker Joe Silva would be retiring by year's end. Even if its timing seemed surprising, the announcement was a long time coming. It's not a promotional sale, pay-per-view main event reveal or high-profile drug test failure, but there is really no way to overstate the legacy of Silva's UFC tenure and potential impact of his imminent departure. It's strange to imagine an MMA landscape without Silva, largely due to his primacy in the sport. Silva's genesis in the industry typifies the man himself, too: A lifelong martial artist, Silva saw a UFC ad in a martial arts magazine after watching the promotion's first event and called the contact number on a whim.

Josh Barnett Thinks ‘Heavyweight Championship Could Be in the Future’

Josh Barnett was rocked early in the opening round against Andrei Arlovski in the main event of UFC Fight Night “Arlovski vs. Barnett” ( online betting ) in Hamburg, Germany, on Saturday, but the former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion’s resilience paid off. Arlovski clipped “The Warmaster” with a sizzling right hand to the head, but Barnett answered with one of his own, only to get rubber-legged seconds later by another missile from the Belarusian. Barnett eventually wore Arlovski down and submitted him with a rear-naked choke in the third, but he claims he was never actually hurt in the battle. “I was never hurt in the fight,” he said at the post-fight press conference. “That’s more due to having either an abnormally thick skull or very little brain matter. I’ve taken the best shots from the best strikers.” Arlovski, also a former heavyweight champ, couldn’t put his foe away and eventually paid the price. His gas tank was depleted by Barnett’s aggressive catch wrestling gameplan and once Barnett had the ultimate advantage, he sealed the deal with a textbook rear-naked choke.

Odds Favor Stipe Miocic, Fabricio Werdum, Mickey Gall Ahead of UFC 203 in Cleveland

Stipe Miocic will attempt to become the ninth man to successfully defend the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight crown when he faces Alistair Overeem in the UFC 203 main event on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, and he will do so with the odds on his side. Bovada.com lists Miocic as a -145 favorite against Overeem (+115) less than a week out from their five-round showdown. The incumbent champion will enter the cage on the strength of three consecutive finishes: Fabricio Werdum , Andrei Arlovski and Mark Hunt were the victims. Miocic, 34, last appeared at UFC 198 on May 14, when he knocked out Werdum 2:47 into the first round to capture the heavyweight title in front of 45,207 fans at the Arena de Baixada, in Curitiba, Brazil. Overeem landed his long-sought title shot on the heels of four straight wins over Arlovski, Junior dos Santos , Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve . A former Dream and Strikeforce champion who also won the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix, the 36-year-old Dutchman boasts 37 finishes among his 41 career victories.

Alistair Overeem looks forward to being 'the most decorated heavyweight of all time'

Unfortunately, Overeem failed a drug test for elevated levels of testosterone leading up to the fight with dos Santos, and the bout fell apart. When he returned to the Octagon nine months later, Overeem then suffered losses in three out of his next four fights and it appeared like he would become a footnote in the UFC history books rather than a potential legend with one final title added to his trophy case of accomplishments.

Josh Barnett Rear-Naked Choke Taps Andrei Arlovski in UFC Fight Night 93 Main Event

Josh Barnett added yet another significant piece to his resume. Barnett became the first man to submit Andrei Arlovski , as he tapped his fellow former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder with a rear-naked choke in the third round of their UFC Fight Night 93 ( online betting ) UFC Fight Night “Arlovski vs. Barnett” co-main event on Saturday at Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany. Arlovski (25-13, 14-7 UFC) conceded defeat 2:53 into round three. Both fighters found themselves dazed by power punches inside the first 20 seconds, with Arlovski emerging from the exchange bleeding from a cut near his hairline. The Belarusian later surprised Barnett with a trip takedown but failed to fully capitalize. The tide turned in round two, where Arlovski wandered into the clinch and wound up underneath “The Warmaster.” Barnett mounted, let loose with elbow-laden ground-and-pound and nearly finished it. Only the clock saved Arlovski, who had little left in the tank at the start of the third round. Barnett (35-8, 7-3 UFC) weathered an inadvertent thumb to the eye that went unnoticed by referee Leon Roberts , drew “The Pit Bull” in close and rolled into mount after threatening with a standing kimura.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Fedor Emelianenko Turns 40

His prime years long since passed, he remains the measuring stick for all mixed martial arts heavyweights, past present and future. Fedor Emelianenko will celebrate his 40th birthday on Sept. 28. The onetime Pride Fighting Championships titleholder was for years one of the central figures in the sport, as he compiled a ridiculous 27-0 record from April 6, 2001 until Nov. 7, 2009. Though Emelianenko still has never competed inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship , he holds wins over four former UFC champions -- Mark Coleman (twice), Kevin Randleman , Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia -- and three Olympic medalists: Satoshi Ishii , Matt Lindland and Naoya Ogawa . “The Last Emperor” has also beaten Brazilian great Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (twice), four-time K-1 World Grand Prix winner Semmy Schilt and 2006 Pride open weight grand prix winner Mirko Filipovic . Emelianenko has rattled off five consecutive victories since his technical knockout loss to Dan Henderson under the Strikeforce banner in 2011, the latest being a controversial majority decision over Fabio Maldonado at a Eurasia Fight Nights events on June 17.

Barnett vs Arlovski: Summoning Sakuraba Through the Double Wrist Lock | FIGHTLAND

Most thought Arlovski was nearing the end as the second round expired with him taking punishment underneath Barnett, unable to rise to go to his corner for a good while after his seconds had come in and told him to get up. Yet in the third round he got back to work admirably and connected a good flurry on Barnett. The Warmaster has never been a brilliant fundamentally sound striker, but he is one who understands the principles. When he is under fire he attempts to get down behind his shoulders and elbows rather than putting on his earmuffs or raising the double forearms like he's sparring in boxing gloves. Falling into a clinch after an Arlovski flurry, Barnett nailed his Jack Johnson uppercut from the inside but found himself covering under fire along the fence shortly afterwards. As Barnett pushed back off of the fence a thumb found its way into his eye and he turned his back on the Belarusian bomber.

The Bottom Line: Stipe Miocic’s Uphill Climb

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** It’s not your imagination. If it feels like the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title has been passed around like a hot potato since its creation, that’s because it largely has been. Much has been made in the past year over the volume of title changes across the board in the UFC. In most divisions, that’s a break from the past. In the heavyweight division, that’s par for the course. As Stipe Miocic attempts his first title defense against Alistair Overeem in the UFC 203 main event ( offshore sportsbooks ) on Saturday, Cleveland’s native son shouldn’t get too comfortable with the gold around his waist. History suggests his run won’t last very long. UFC heavyweight and interim heavyweight champions defending their titles -- including in unification bouts -- are just 16-15, barely over .500. Heavyweight champions eke out the all-time series over challengers thanks to successful defenses against the likes of David Abbott , Gan McGee and Justin Eilers .

California Fighter Marcus Kowal Loses 15-Month-Old Son in Suspected DUI Hit-and-Run

The 15-month-old son of mixed martial artist Marcus Kowal was killed in a suspected DUI hit-and-run over the weekend in Hawthorne, California, a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles reported . Liam Mikael Kowal was in a stroller being pushed through a crosswalk by his 15-year-old aunt when the incident occurred. He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where the family on Sunday removed him from life support, according to the report. The aunt suffered leg injuries but is reported to be in stable condition. Donna Marie Higgins, 72, was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony drunk driving. According to police, witnesses followed Higgins after she left the scene. She was reportedly released on $100,000 bail but may now be charged with felony vehicular manslaughter since the child died. Charges are expected to be filed as soon as Tuesday. Kowal has compiled a 3-1-1 record -- he suffered his only loss in Strikeforce -- as a professional mixed martial artist but has not fought since 2012. He announced via Facebook that the family plans to donate his son’s organs .

Jacare Souza evened the score with Gegard Mousasi. | Photo: Josh Hedges/Zuffa/UFC/Getty Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza was the better man this time. The 2005 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist submitted Gegard Mousasi with a third-round guillotine choke in the UFC Fight Night “Jacare vs. Mousasi 2” headliner on Friday at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. Mousasi (35-5-2, 2-2 UFC) conceded defeat 4:30 into round three, as he tapped out for the first time in more than eight years. Souza, who was knocked out by a Mousasi upkick under the Dream banner in September 2008, dominated the rematch from start to finish. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt tuned up his punches at opportune times and executed takedowns in all three rounds, suffocating Mousasi with oppressive top control. Souza scored with a trip takedown with roughly 90 seconds left in the third frame, caught the choke with Mousasi in a seated position, closed guard and secured the finish. The 34-year-old Souza (21-3, 4-0 UFC) has rattled off seven straight wins and has the look of a serious title contender at 185 pounds.

UFC Fight Night 93 Bonuses: Barnett, Arlovski, Bader All Pocket Cash

A trio of veterans took home some extra spending money in Germany for their performances inside the Octagon on Saturday. UFC Fight Night “Arlovski vs. Barnett” ( online betting ) was held at the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg and the main event between Josh Barnett and Andrei Arlovski was a memorable one. Barnett survived a wild opening round that saw him clipped by a series of right hands from Arlovski to slowly break the Belarusian down. After “The Warmaster” scored a takedown in the third and applied all sorts of pressure, he forced “The Pitbull” to roll over and give up his back. Several punches followed and from there, Barnett latched on a textbook rear-naked choke, ending the duel of former UFC heavyweight champions. The thrilling win for Barnett capped off the event and it was clearly the highlight bout of the event. Both men pocketed an additional $50K for the battle, which was declared by the UFC as the “Fight of the Night.” Barnett’s endurance and eventual submission – he became the first man to ever submit Arlovski in MMA – earned him another $50K for a “Performance of the Night” bonus.
